![]() "Rarities & Duets" Lyrics from Miscellaneous Jackson Browne Songs. This is NOT an album. This is just a listing of miscellaneous Jackson Browne songs that do not appear on his standard CDs.
There are three types of songs included on this page: (1) Some of these are Jackson Browne songs that were released on compilation albums, B-sides to singles, or video but never made it onto Jackson's regular CDs. (2) Some of these songs are duets that appear on albums by other artists, like the duet with Clarence Carter on the song "You're A Friend Of Mine", which appeared on a Clarence Clemons album, and as a single, but has never appeared on an official Jackson Browne release. (3) Some of these songs were written by Jackson, but never recorded by him, like the song "Nightingale" which was an outtake from his debut album that was later recorded by the Eagles. Please note, this list does NOT include any tracks where Jackson merely sings harmony or background vocals for another artist. This page also does not include alternative versions of songs officially released on his albums.
CROW ON THE CRADLE (written by Sydney Carter) (from the soundtrack to No Nukes; peformed live by Jackson Browne with Graham Nash & David Lindley) The sheep's in the meadowThe cow's in the corn Now is the time for a child to be born He'll laugh at the moon And cry for the sun And if it's a boy he'll carry a gun Sang the crow on the cradle And if it should be that this baby's a girl Never you mind if her hair doesn't curl With rings on her fingers And bells on her toes And a bomber above her wherever she goes Sang the crow on the cradle The crow on the cradle The black and the white Somebody's baby is born for a fight The crow on the cradle The white and the black Somebody's baby is not coming back Sang the crow on the cradle Your mother and father will sweat and they'll slave To build you a coffin and dig you a grave Hush-a-bye little one, never you weep For we've got a toy that can put you to sleep Sang the crow on the cradle Bring me my gun, and I'll shoot that bird dead That's what your mother and father once said The crow on the cradle, what can we do Ah, this is a thing that I'll leave up to you Sang the crow on the cradle Sang the crow on the cradle (c) WARNER-TAMBERLANE PUBLISHING CORP., BMI YOU'RE A FRIEND OF MINE (written by Narada Michael Walden & Jeffrey Cohen) (performed by Clarence Clemons & Jackson Browne on the Clarence Clemons album Hero) Striking out?Well count me in I'm gonna stand right by your side through thick or thin Ain't no doubt Gonna win A walk through hell ain't bad compared to where we've been Oh you can depend on me Over and over... over and over Know that I intend to be The one who who always makes you laugh until you cry And you can call on me until the day you die Years may come and go Here's one thing I know All my life You're a friend of mine What if mountains fall? MARKS (written by Jackson Browne) (from the Jackson Browne: Going Home video) Oh how sadly sound the songs the queen must sing of dying A prisoner upon her throne of melancholy sighing If she could see her mirror now She would be free of those who bow and Scrape the ground before her feet Silently she walks among her dying midnight roses Watches as each moment goes that never really know us And so it seems she doesn't care If she has dreams of no one there Within the shadows of her room But all my frozen words agree, and say it's time to Call back, all the birds I sent to Fly behind her castle walls, and I'm Weary of the nights I've seen Inside these empty halls Wooden lady turn and turn among my weary secrets And wave within the hours past and other empty pockets Maybe we've found what we have lost When we've unwound so many crossed entangling Misunderstandings; but All my frozen words agree and say it's time to Call back all the birds I sent to Fly behind her castle walls, and I'm Weary of the nights I've seen Inside these empty walls (c) 1970 OPEN WINDOW MUSIC, COMPANION MUSIC AND ATLANTIC MUSIC CORP. MY PROBLEM IS YOU (written by Jackson Browne) (Performed by Jackson Browne and Luis Conte from his album The Road; Original version released on the album I'm Alive; Spanish translation by Jorge Calderón.) To love and get away before the walls have arisen You've got to be free But to go on attempting to break into the prison You'd have to be me I wait for the sun to rise over the mountain I wait for your touch I wait for your angels to carry me home But I wait too much Waiting for you I have no problem telling right from wrong Fiction from what's true No problem telling the dream from the dawn My problem is you Waiting here for you I wanted to live in the realm of the senses You've got to know how And for some kinds of pleasure there are no defenses I know that now Our love is a crackling ladder of lightning Our love is a fire Our love is a wave moving deep in an ocean Of need and desire Waiting for you I have no problem with this crooked world I play the cards I drew No problem with the changes life has hurled My problem is you Waiting here for you I need your wonder and I need your light I need your tender touch to heal the night I need you laughing and I need you free And I need to lock you away deep inside of me Waiting for you I have no problem telling right from wrong The way some people do I know exactly where these arms belong My problem is you Waiting here for you Esperando por ti (waiting for you) Necesito tu luz (I need your light) Tu sutil maravilla (your delicate wonder) La ternura en tu piel (the tenderness in your hair) Tu sonrisa sencilla (your simple smile) Quien o que es este milagro (who or what is this miracle) Viva libre en ti (living free in you) Necesito encerrarte bien el dentro de mi (I need to lock you well inside of me) (c) 1993 SWALLOW TURN MUSIC, ASCAP I'VE BEEN THE ONE (written by Lowell George) (Performed by Jackson Browne on the Lowell George tribute album Rock And Roll Doctor;1997) I've been the one who has been frightened and almost borne away by the very thoughts that I feared yesterday And it must be the dust or smoke that's in my eyes How can I cry about something from someone I won't see Oh my friends all say she had her chance Let's go shoot some pool Ya know a fool is just a fool And I've tried everything that whiskey cures But the pain endures and now I'm feeling that pain I put my pride in my pocket That's how I'll spend my loneliest days and it must be dust or smoke that's in my eyes Don't know what to do Hold the lamp above the rafters These smoke-filled rooms will not replace her I've been the one who has been frightened and almost borne away by the very thoughts that I feared yesterday and it must be dust or smoke that's in my eyes (c) 1971 Abraham Music (ASCAP) KISSES SWEETER THAN WINE (written by Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman and Huddie Ledbetter) (Performed by Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt on the Pete Seeger tribute album Where Have All The Flowers Gone;1998) Jackson: When I was a young man I'd never been kissed; I got to thinking about what I had missed. I found a girl. I kissed her and then... Oh Lord, I kissed her again. Together: Oooooh, kisses sweeter than wine. Oooooh, kisses sweeter than wine. Bonnie: He asked me to marry and be his sweet wife; We would be happy -- all of our life. He begged and he pleaded like a natural man, and then... Oh Lord, I gave him my hand. Together: Oooooh, kisses sweeter than wine. Oooooh, kisses... Jackson: I worked mighty hard and so did my wife; Working hand in hand to make a good life. Corn in the field and wheat in the bins, and then... Oh Lord, I was the father of twins. Together: Oooooh, kisses sweeter than wine. Oooooh, kisses... Bonnie: Our children numbered just about four And they all had sweethearts knocking on the door. They all got married and they didn't wait, I was... Oh Lord! A grandmother of eight! Together: Oooooh, kisses sweeter than wine. Oooooh, kisses... Jackson: Now we are old and ready to go Thinking about what happened a long time ago. Bonnie: We had lots of kids and trouble and pain, but... Oh Lord, we'd do it again. Together: Oooooh, kisses sweeter than wine. Oooooh, kisses... Oooooh, kisses sweeter than wine. Oooooh, kisses... (c) TRO-Folkways REDEMPTION SONG (written by Bob Marley) (from the Concert for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame CD; performed by Jackson Browne) Old pirates, yes, they rob I Sold I to the merchant ships Minutes after they took I From the bottomless pit But my hand was made strong By the hand of the Almighty We forward in this generation triumphantly Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom? 'Cause all I ever had, redemption songs, redemption songs Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery None but ourselves can free our minds Have no fear of atomic energy 'Cause none of them can stop the time How long shall they kill our prophets While we stand aside and look? Yes, some say it's just a part of it We've got to fulfill the book IF I ONLY HAD A BRAIN (written by Harold Arlen & E.Y. "Yip" Harburg) (from the soundtrack album The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Do Come True; performed by Jackson Browne backed by Ry Cooder & David Sanborn) See, I can't scare anybody. They come from miles around To laugh in my face and eat in my field. Said a scarecrow swinging on a pole, To some blackbirds sittin' on a fence, "Oh, the Lord gave me a soul, But, forgot to give me common sense." Said the blackbirds, "Well, well, well. What the thunder would you do with common sense?" Said the scarecrow,"Would be pleasin' just to reason out the reason of the wishes and the whyness and the whence" If I had an once of common sense... (If he had an ounce of common sense) (Well, what would you do Scarecrow?") I would while away the hours Conferin' with the flowers Consultin' with the rain And my head I'd be scratchin' While my thoughts were busy hatchin' If I only had a brain. I'd unravel every riddle, For every individle, In trouble or in pain. With the thoughts I'd be thinkin', I could be another Lincoln, If I only had a brain. Oh I-- could tell you why, The ocean's near the shore. I could think of things I never thought before, Then I'd sit-- and think some more. I would not be just a nothin', my head all full of stuffin', My heart all full of pain. I would dance and by merry, Life would be a dingle derry, If I only had a brain. If I only had a brain-- (If he only had a brain.) I could tell you why The ocean's near the shore. I could think of things I never thought before And then I'd sit-- and think some more. Ya, it would be kind of pleasin' To reason out the reason, for the things I can't explain. Then perhaps I'd deserve you, and be even worthy of you, If I only had a brain. I could dance and by merry, Life would be a dingle derry, If I only had a brain. If I only had a brain. (If he only had a brain.) (c) 1939, 1996 EMI FIEST CATALOG, INC. We hear he is a wiz of a wiz If ever a wiz there was. Gary Davis, additional lyrics by Jackson Browne & Glenn Frey) (revised lyrics performed by Jackson since the mid 1980s.) Sittin' here thinking 'bout back when Everybody I knew, was my best friend cocaine, running all round my brain It was you take Sally, and I'll take Sue and if you let me see your coke, I'll take Sally too cocaine, running all round my brain Uh-hu mama, ain't it strange How a mind can turn, and a life can change Cocaine, runnin' all round my brain There was damage to the body Damage to the soul Damage to the quality of the Rock n' Roll And the years spent stumbling around half knowing something that something was wrong And it don't help now, but you can look back and see how some of us damaged are creativity And there are good friends of mine that are dead and gone uhhuh, mmmhmmm, cocaine Now I ain't saying, it wasn't fun at the time Staying up for days on end, crazed out of my mind Waking up in strange places feeling like the army had marched across my tongue And look at me now, sharp as a tack Except for a few billion brain cells I wouldn't mind having back Now you take Nancy, and I'll take Ron No telling what kinds of drugs those two are on Inner city ghetto children, going down slow Ron and Nancy wanna tell them you can Just Say No Then they cancel the school lunch program, buy a few more tanks Uh huh, come here quick The hypocrisy, bout to make me sick (long fiddle/piano work here by Lindley/JB) Well ya finally get so tired, of walking around looking and feeling like shit You decide Today is the day is the day I quit Till a little later in the evening You start thinking about...Whatcha gonna do? But I wouldn't have been a user, even one more day If you could have shown me how I was helping turn a profit for the CIA Cocaine, runnin' all round my brain JUST LIKE FOREVER (by Jackson Browne) (unreleased Jackson Browne song, sung in concert a few times) It wasn't me at your window, Baby. It wasn't me at your door. It must have been some other fool With his heart in his hand, Coming back for more. I was there when you closed your eyes. But it wasn't me when you came. I just thought I heard you call my name. You were there when I needed someone With your warmth and your style. I was back in the world again And it was real for awhile. I was ready for love to be coming, But not for what love became, And I thought I heard you call my name. Call my name. Now there was something only we knew together Far too simple to explain. Love smiled on us just like forever. You're always leaving town. First you come around. Then you can't be found It always brings me down. There's nothing wrong with my heart, Baby. There's nothing wrong with the world. If a girl don't feel the same way I feel, There's nothing wrong with the girl. Maybe we were too different to love each other. Maybe too much the same. Anyway, I thought I heard you call my name. Call my name. Like you were drifting away down the river. All my voices and curses in the pain Love flows on just like forever. You're always leaving town. First you come around. Then you can't be found And it always brings me down. Da da da da da Da da da dum dum dum Da da da Ohhhh no no no no no no Na na na na na Just like forever. Da da da da da Just like forever. Just like forever. YOU ASSHOLE YOU (by Doug Haywood) (performed by Jackson on rare occasion) Well it came to me as you came, You don't even know my name. You'd just as soon be fucking a doornob, You asshole you. You'll fuck anything that moves, And I'll tell you what that proves: You just want meat, you don't want me, You asshole you. Well you wish that I was stronger, and could last a little longer. I get so mad that I could spit. I don't need that kind of shit. Well you toyed with my affection, And you laughed at my errection, And its lack of circumsection, You asshole you. I'LL FLY AWAY (WITHOUT YOU) (by Jackson Browne, Craig Doerge and Rosemary Butler) (recorded by Nicolette Larson; 1982) I've been sitting up all night without you Trying not to think that much about you How do you expect me not to doubt you I don't want to but I'm here And I can't stop this whispering in my ear I'll fly away without you, I'll fly away without you I'll fly away without you, babe, without you fly away, Without you You know I never wanted to confine you I always let you come and go your way Honey, if you let that freedom blind you, you know I won't wait around It took too long to find this love we found I'll fly away wthout you, I'll fly away without you I'll fly away if you don't do something to make me stay I want to, but I can't be the only one to say I want you When I think how easily you caught me Well, it wasn't hard to pull me to the ground Whether it was something that you taught me Or just something that I found Loving you is all that holds me down I'll fly away without you, I'll fly away without you I'll fly away if you don't do something to make me stay I want to, but I can't be the only one to say I want to And I won't have your love no other way Chorus (c)1981 Swallow Turn Music all rights administered by WB Music Corp./Fairstar Music/Channeled Songs ASCAP. Here (by Jackson Browne)(from the Kevin Spacey film Shrink; 2009) You wait for the tears to fall, but they won't You think you should know what to say, but you don't Here-- at the break of day The world moving on it's way-- without her. You're sitting there staring into the distance Like you're putting up some kind of resistance But you barely see the dawn It's like this river that you're on. Here-- where the sorrows flow Knowing you will never know about her Here-- You're here-- The city waking up off in the distance They're all working on some other existence But you can't quite seem to care Like you know they're not going anywhere. Here-- where the sorrows flow Here-- where the questions grow And all you will never know about her-- You wait for the tears to fall but they won't You think you should know what to say, but you don't Here-- at the break of dawn The world moving on-- without her. |
