CONCERT REVIEW: September 30, 1999 in Las Vegas, NV at the Reflection Bay Golf & Beach Club, Lake Las Vegas Resort

Saw Jackson play in Vegas on Thursday Sept 30th.

Fun show at a golf country club at Lake Las Vegas Resort to benefit the anti-nuke dump folks in Nevada. I've seen Jackson plenty of times in concert, but never in a small group of less than 100 people. He took the time to meet just about everybody. Certainly if you wanted to say hi to him, the atmosphere was there to do it.

Played for about an hour---electric piano and accoustic guitars only. "Pretender" was the big hit---but also did plenty of songs that only die hards would know---started with 'Deluge". This "show" was given no publicity until the night it happened, very few even knew about it.

Fun night, looking forward to Jackson in LV at Mandalay Bay with the Eagles at the end of the year....but it will be hard to match one fun hour with a few friends in Vegas!

Webmaster's Note: Citizen Alert, a 24-year-old environmental group based in Nevada, hosted its 3rd Annual "Nevada is Not a Wasteland Day" in support of their campaign to stop the proposed high-level nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain. The September 30the event was held at La Chandele Restaurant at the Reflection Bay Golf & Beach Club, Lake Las Vegas Resort and featured a special performance by Jackson Browne. The event was advertised as an extraordinary six course meal prepared by world renowned chefs: Emeril Lagasse (Emeril's), Joe Ramano (Aureole), Michael Jordan (Rosemary's), David Tanis (Chez Panisse - Alice Waters' restaurant), Richard Mazzera & Maggie Ponds (Cesar), and William Becker (La Chandele Restaurant). Jackson did a short performance following dessert which was unannounced due to contractual obligations with his upcoming shows in Las Vegas with the Eagles.

CONCERT REVIEW: October 2, 1999 in Sedona, Arizona for the 10th Annual Verde Valley School benefit concert

Just got home a while ago from a truly wonderful Sedona weekend. I'm tired so this won't be long but thought I'd give a quick overview.

Shawn Colvin did not perform and as far as we know never made it to Sedona. Early in the show, Jackson announced that Shawn's plane had been delayed somewhere and they didn't know if she was going to make it in or not. He said they were doing everything possible to get her there. Jackson said that no one could possibly be more disappointed then him. He also said that if you had come specifically to see Shawn and wanted to get your money back that they would refund the admission price.

Apparently 12 people out of 4500 asked for a refund and then left the show. The good news was that Jackson and Bonnie filled up Shawn's time.

Ulali opened the show, followed by Trudell and then by David and Wally. Jackson came on did his 45 minutes set with Bonnie singing background on several songs. Next Bonnie took the stage and Jackson joined her quickly. Since they had extra time and although they were frustrated by problems keeping quitars tuned and other sound problems, the two of them rocked us for the next two hours. Fabulous.

I didn't keep set lists and I'm sure others will post many of the great details of the day. It was a picture perfect day in Sedona and many of us from the list had our usual spots right up front. Sure was great to look around and see you guys there!

Fritz and Kevin (from Jackson's band) were there and were awesome. They seemed to be having a great time.

BTW, the BBQ Eileen coordinated was a huge success. We had arrived late so it was already in full swing. Everyone seemed to be having a very good time and Justin sounded great. Thanks for performing for us!

Can't wait to hear everyone's stories!!

CONCERT REVIEW: October 2, 1999 in Sedona, Arizona for the 10th Annual Verde Valley School benefit concert

Hi Everyone,

I too, just returned from Sedona and would like to share what a great time we had. True Shawn Colvin couldn't get there, but the superior effort made by everyone else on the bill was just great!!! I feel that it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, everyone in good spirits, and the whole place is so very extraordinarily beautiful. I met lots of nice people and danced myself happy...even through the power outage (Thanks so much Wally for keeping up the beat!!!!)

I am ultimately grateful to Jackson for having the heart to do the shows for the school and Bonnie and John and David and Wally and Ulalifor giving it their all. Such a beautiful outcome...so many happy folks.

Blessing to all...

CONCERT REVIEW: October 2, 1999 in Sedona, Arizona for the 10th Annual Verde Valley School benefit concert

Hello from Hotlanta!

I know all my pals out there in cyberland haven't read enough reviews of the Sedona show yet, so I thought I would go ahead and add mine... In case your memories are growing cloudy, I am WORLD RENOWNED for running on. You may either want to grab a cup of (shade grown) coffee, or hit the delete key... I will be here a while:-)

We had a most wonderful time:-))) Mike and I picked up Linda and Jeff at their hotel before the show, and Linda and I ran into Fritz Lewak and George Marinelli, (Bonnie's guitarist) in the restaurant. Linda was talking to Fritz, and it took me a minute to recognize him... When I did, I said "oh, your Fritz, the DRUMMER???" he smiled and said, "yeah".. I of course followed up with a most intelligent "My daughter is a drummer. She isn't very GOOD, but she IS smart". He laughed, and said "I'm not really any good either, I'm just fakin' it"... We laughed, and left... What a NERD I am!!!

The show was the most fantastic one yet! Of course, the last show I saw is ALWAYS the most fantastic one yet:-) Even though I did get to see the tour thing twice, this was much better, IMHO). I do like Bruce and Shawn, but Jackson and Bonnie are my faves... Shawn was supposed to be at the show in Sedona, but apparently her plane was delayed, and she missed it. It was ok with me. I like her, you understand, but because she wasn't there, Jackson and Bonnie played looonnnger:-)

There are two types of tickets sold - General Admin, and VIP... Really, all of the seats are General Admin, but the VIP tickets entitle you to a tent with shade, a shorter line for the porta-potty, and snacks. Also, they only sell about 100 of the VIP tickets, so the crowd you are running against for a spot is smaller.... VIP ticket holders usually end up with some PRIMO seats.

We arrived at the VIP tent at about 10ish, and the gates for the "charge" opened at 10:30. Everyone lines up, and the promoters play The William Tell Overture - signaling the time to run for your spot. This year, they forgot the music, so they sang it... It was kind of funny, but I was a little stressed about getting a good spot, so I didn't take time to appreciate it. We ended up third row, center:-))))) Yippee! Thanks to Mikie! We sat in the grass, and took the chance to socialize and go get a t-shirt for about and hour and a half. The show started promptly at noon, with the start of the show including Native American music; appropriate to the theme of the benefit.

Jackson, came out and announced the first act... They were a group of Native American women called Ulali. This was VERY interesting... The three of them harmonized on strong, stirring vocals. The lyrics were mostly in various Native American tongues, but from the introductions of each of the songs, I got the impression that they were not only historically significant, but feminist as well. It was VERY cool for us girls in the audience. My most profound impression from their set was the power of their voices, fueled by the emotion of the words. It is strange to be so moved by words I couldn't understand. They must have done a very good job... There was true joy in their performance.

John Trudell and Bad Dog gave the second performance. Now... How to describe this group??? They have ROCK backing, Native American chanting, and a spoken voice, poetry, voice over... It has great potential, but I must say, it was much better last year. John Trudell is Native American - a political and human rights activist. He is very direct, and a very powerful performer. Last year however, his performance was more relaxed and entertaining for me. This year, he seemed a bit pissed off. Although his "lyrics" include strong political messages, there is a reasonableness about them. This year, I felt a lot of anger from him. I wonder if it was the order of the sets? Following Ulali could have had some impact on his performance. Since I could not understand the foreign language, it is entirely possible that they were a little tougher on the men than he was interested in hearing:-) - OR, it could just be that the girls were having so much fun, it made him look more subdued... Either way, I didn't like his set as much this year as last year.

At this point, Jackson announced that Shawn Colvin's flight was delayed, and that it was doubtful she would make the show. He offered refunds to those people who came only to see Shawn, but added "We'll be happy to refund your money, but you WILL have to leave... " It was good for a little laugh following the bad news that Shawn would probably not be there.

Now here is where the FUN started for me... You see, being this close, I could REALLY enjoy the show. I could see EVERYTHING... Including Jackson's FLIP FLOPS!!! Yup! I had a close up view of those SEXY FEET!!!

After the bad news, came the intro for "The Beevis and Butthead of the Music Industry" - David Lindley & Wally Ingram... David came out sporting some very fine, fire-engine red, polyester pants, and a multi-colored, patchwork print, polyester shirt. VERY fashionable.... His wardrobe may be a little hard on the eyes, but let me tell you... His music is definitely not hard on the ears. That guy is just incredible on anything with strings. I bet he could play a dental floss holder with style!!! Right in front of his pet alien, (yes, he has a little "alien" doll on his amp), he had lined up at least 6 of his favorite guitars, (and guitar-like instruments). I use that term because I'm not well versed enough in stringed instruments to say for sure if they are "legitimate", "sanctioned" instruments or things that he invented himself... He played one thing that had 8 strings on it? Someone made a comment about him "using the Force", and I don't doubt it a bit. It is truly amazing to see. Wally was not quite as colorful, but FANTASTIC just the same.

Together, they did some of the same wacky stuff, as on the "Big" Tour - including "Cat Food Sandwiches" dedicated to the backstage food in some of their previously visited venues... "C'mon Wally, let's get us some..." They also did a cover of a song called "Pay Bo Diddley". I don't remember who wrote it. Anyway, about half way through, the power went out. Wally was still wailing away on his kit, but David's strings were toast... After a few minutes, he picked up one of Wally's Bongos, and drummed along... The whole crowd just kept right on singing "Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy Bo Diddley, Paaaaaaaaaayyyyy Bo Diddley"... It was very fun... After a few minutes, Jackson, Bonnie, Ulali, and John Trudell all came out and started shaking tambourines, playing triangles... Any kind of percussion instrument they could get their hands on. The ad-lib was just what we needed to get our blood going. Some people get real put off by production problems. I thought it served to bring the show together at that point...Like I said... Very entertaining.

They got the power fixed and Jackson came out to do his set. David and Wally stayed for most of it. This is where things got REALLY good, because Jackson brought Fritz and Kevin McCormick with him. George Marinelli and Bonnie herself were off and on the stage through most of his set. At several points during Jackson's set, there were 3 or 4 Guitars, 2 sets of drums, a piano and a bass - all going at the same time... ROCK & ROLL!!! Yea!

He played, (not in order): Before the Deluge(just beautiful with David on the fiddle), Your Bright Baby Blues (Bonnie backing), Barricades of Heaven, World in Motion (with Bonnie on slide guitar and backing - they BOTH flubbed the lyrics at different times:-)), Doctor My Eyes (AWESOME - we all danced), The Next Voice You Hear (called it a "Zen Buddhist letter to himself"), The Pretender (with Bonnie backing). He also did a duet of My Opening Farewell with Bonnie singing lead, and Running On Empty during the encore. All of these classics were so much better than I have seen them in YEARS, because Lindley was there, and this time it was HIS set - not like the Sensitive Ones... I liked the "Big" tour, but this was so much better for me. Jackson is such a great performer with his band. The last few times I have seen him in concert, it was solo-acoustic, and he was great, but I didn't realize how much I missed seeing him as a band leader until I saw him with the band, (especially David and Bonnie). It was just so much fun.

Bonnie came out to close the show, and played many of her classic great tunes. She did: Nick of Time, Love Sneaking Up On You, Love Letter, Thing Called Love, Let's Give 'em Something To Talk About, and a couple of Blues numbers that I'm not real familiar with.... Bonnie was full of vinegar all afternoon... She made some of the funniest wise cracks... Highlights are: David's wardrobe... he was modeling for us, and his fly was down. She says "Whoa David! You're trollin' with the BIG WORM, now"... Thing Called Love was "The Boner in Sedona", and Nick of Time was her "Menopause song" - you know "Love in the nick of time... " She was giving this couple in the front row all kinds of grief because they were hanging all over each other... She told them they needed to get a room, and asked how they thought she could concentrate with all that goin' on... She is so SASSY!!! I was just so entertained by her. She plays "that little brown guitar" with so much control and fire... What an incredible woman!

I really LOVE John Prine's Angel From Montgomery, and with Jackson singing the part where he says "when I was a young girl, I had me a cowboy" everyone just cracked up... I don't know how he does it with such a straight face, but that is half the fun of it... As I mentioned before, she also did My Opening Farewell (with Jackson backing). This is one of my all time favorite JB songs... I know, I know... They are ALL my favorites... But this one is sooooo tender and heart-breaking... As was mentioned in some of the previous reviews, they had a little trouble getting the guitars tuned right for this duet... You know how Jackson is about that:-)... We were afraid when he sent them back to the guitar techs that they would ditch playing the tune, but sure enough, they followed though with it. With my untrained ears, I thought it was one of the best renditions I have heard of that song... When Bonnie said "Thanks Jackson, that was really beautiful", he replied "Yeah, well it has been MORE beautiful"... I guess that was his tribute to the guitar-tuning Gods... He is such a perfectionist...

In case you don't already have it, Bonnie and Jackson do My Opening Farewell on her Road Tested 2 CD set... It was a true treat, and an unexpected one. They hadn't done that song together in a while, so I didn't think they would do it for us... I really enjoyed it.

They did a couple of songs for the encore, including David's Mercury Blues, and Running On Empty... This was probably one of the best numbers of the show for me. They just JAMMED on it... Fritz was pretty much just having a great time all afternoon, but when he raised his sticks up in the air and yelled "one, two, three, four" they LAUNCHED it into outer space... I wonder if THAT was the UFO everyone was talking about??? I think this one orbited the earth for all those who were unfortunate enough to miss the show to hear... At the end, Jackson did that AWESOME leap up in the air to cut off the final cord with his back to the audience, and his right hand up over his head... I swear, 20 years just melted away for the man!!! (I guess you know you are getting old when you think '30' is young;-)... What an entertainer!! I LOVE JACKSON BROWNE!!! <

All in all, a fantastic show... I had a GREAT time, and if Fritz Lewak was "fakin' it" he is the most convincing faker I ever saw... Meg Ryan's got NOTHIN' on him :-p~~~ He and George Marinelli were having so much fun all afternoon... I really felt like I was crashing the party of the century.

I met so many great new friends, and got to see alot of wonderful familiar faces this weekend... All I can suggest is that if you haven't been before, start saving your pennies for next year. This is an outing not to be missed.

I'm not going to try and list everyone's names, because I am sure I would miss someone important. I would like to say a special thanks to Eileen, Amelie, James, Vivian, and Carrie for all the extra effort they put into making this such a special weekend. I have said it before, and I'll say it again... Jackson Browne has some of the nicest fans in the world... I'm so glad to be a part of the group.

Thanks to Jackson, Bonnie, Ulali, John & Bad Dog, David & Wally, George, Kevin, Fritz and all the other musicians and production folks that made the show possible. It was just GREAT!!!

Peace Y'all,

Happy Birthday Jackson! Really missing you in Maine. It was 1977(pretty sure Ethan was almost 4), that I first saw you on Oct. 8th in Boston. Can't imagine that you look at this stuff, but decided to take a chance. Last time you were in Maine I gave you a picture of you and David Lindley(in the frame upside down)! Hope you have a great Birthday and you come back to Maine soon,

CONCERT REVIEW: October 6, 1999 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the Sweeney Center

We had the pleasure of attending Jackson and John Trudell's benefit for the Native American Prep School of Northern New Mexico. They donated their services to this burgeoning boarding school for secondary students located in the Pecos Wilderness of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. We met the students (there were about twenty of them) at the reception following the concert. They were very moved by Trudell's poem-songs and they seemed pleased with the quality of Jackson's performance.

There were a thousand fortunate souls in the proletariat Sweeney Convention Center in the heart of Santa Fe. There aren't many proletariat places in Santa Fe!

Trudell's set was wonderful. The combination of the intensity of his poetry, the wailing of his lead singer, and the tasteful background and fills of his two electric guitarists and percussionist made for entrancing and enchanting (the right kind of music for New Mexico) listening.

Jackson didn't keep us waiting very long, strolling on at about 9:00. We were very exhilirated. I'd seen him four times or so, twice in 1977 around the "Running on Empty" tours, and in 1993 and 1994, always in an electric band context, but at least in decent venues; SPAC, the Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque. But the anticipation of theis benefit, billed as a "Solo and Acoustic" concert, was overwhelming, especially since we were fifth row center.

To get to the point, seeing Jackson Browne in this context was powerful and marvelous. His voice was so strong. His guitar playing was clear, accurate, utilitarian. His electric piano playing was memorably powerful. what was most noteworthy was how pleased Jackson was with the context and the crowd. He responded early to some wild man screaming "Rosie" from the back. Much to my wife's chagrin, what was obviously going to be "For a Dancer" got shelved when someone yelled out "Lawless Avenue." Jackson stopped playing, looked up, smiled and nodded his head, virtually leapt out of the piano stool grabbed a guitar and after aan animated intro about how this was a favorite song about his childhood, he did a remarkably emotional "Lawless Avenue."

The best thing about the show was how the lyrics from the classic songs from Late for the Sky and The Pretender still conveyed the incredible visions and depth that first attracted us. For two hours, Jackson gave an adulating crowd a spiritual uplift most fitting to being in the City of the Holy Faith.

CONCERT REVIEW: October 6, 1999 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the Sweeney Center

Saw Jackson in Santa Fe on October 6. He was doing a benifit for the Indian Prep School in the Santa Fe area. I got there about 30 minutes before the show started and ran into Jackson walking across the plaza going to his hotel. I got to meet him and shake his hand. It was a real thrill for me, being that I have been a huge fan since the mid seventies. I waited around to see if he would come back by and he did. He was staying at the La Fonda Hotel and on his way back over to the Sweeney Center, I got to speak to him again. I had my camera with me and the person with him agreed to take a picture of Jackson and myself. Everything was picture perfect, when the flash didn't work on my camera. We tried again, and no flash. I was pretty bummed, but life goes on. I didn't even have a pen for a autograph.

The show started with John Trudell. Jackson came out and sang on the second song, and John played for about 1 hour. Jackson came out and played for almost 2 hours. All guitar and piano. Johns band stepped in and played with him for several of the songs. Wally played drums for most of the show. The show was excellent. I had a great seat, 2nd row, just off center. It was a performance I will remember always.

Well thats all for now.

CONCERT REVIEW: October 6, 1999 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the Sweeney Center

I had the pleasure of going to both Red Rocks shows, September 11th and 12th and Portland show September 24th with Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitte, Shawn Colvin, David Lindley, Bruce Hornsby and Wally Ingram. Absolutely fantastic!!! All of them looked like they were having the time of their life. They sounded wonderful and they did a great ensemble of each others songs as well as songs that they had written with other people like End of the Innocence by Bruce Hornsby and Don Henley.

In addition, I also went to see Jackson Browne in Santa Fe. It was a benefit for "NAPS" or North American preparatory school. Jackson, as always, was wonderful. It was a very small venue and his interjection of spontaneous one-liners was non -stop. The crowd was yelling requests and he had no problem doing most of them as they came up. When the request of "Rosie" came up, he calmly said, "These things shouldn't be put off!!" Of course, many people don't know what the song is about. I'll keep them guessing if they don't!! While singing the song, he made a remark which indicated his embarrassment in writing the lyrics about the "girl sniffing around like a half grown female pup." It was very funny and this was one of the best concerts I have seen because he was very "close " to the people.

He played for what seemed to be at least three hours and did almost all of my favorites (which are actually endless when it comes to Jackson). Wally Ingram played with him and did a great job as well as a man named Mark Shark that played guitar and did a fantastic job on the slide. I had to drive 6 hours for the show from Boulder, Colorado but it was well work it!!!

I am sure that the Eagles and Jackson Browne shows in Vegas at the end of the year will be fantastic!!!!! I may just have to go........

Regards,

CONCERT REVIEW: October 2, 1999 in Sedona, Arizona for the 10th Annual Verde Valley School benefit concert

to whom; i have been a fan for.... let me say that i have seen jackson and side kick lindley many times and wont again unless some conditions are met. this concert was to include shawn colvin. she failed to show. lindley, who by anyones standards is a huge talent. played again in the two piece format. not very fat, or exelerating. he is really at his most enjoyable when in a larger format. also his stage presence was the worst ever here. the was behind some stage gear allmost out of view. hey, dont get me wrong. they are championing great causes etc. but, its about the music man. when the quality of anything is comprimised we tend to avoid it. i also felt that this "laid back" venue never really got a good head of steam going. i think that as ticket buyers and fans we should expect the very best, (and mostly we get this) but , sometimes costs, cancellations, and compramises. make demons of us all.

One of the highlights of my week is visiting your Web Site on Jackson Browne. A fan since a 1976 high school English teacher had us interpret poetry in the form of listening to the words of "The Pretender". I immediately bought all previous albums and have purchased all the rest, numerous times, in album, cassette, CD and Enhanced CD form.

I am so enthralled that I named my little boy Jackson. And I tell everyone that I named him after JB. He's six years old.

The day I met Jackson Browne, I forgot to tell him!! On the best day of my life (perhaps with the exception of my wedding day and the birth of my three children), I got to meet Jackson after a David Letterman show on February 18, 1994 (I'll never forget). My cousin had tickets for that night coincidentally, and when she found out he was the guest, she gave me the tickets (Everyone knows how much I love Jackson).

I waited outside for an autograph (in about two feet of snow), and he walked by and nicely said he was too busy and on his way to a concert at the Paramount Theatrein NY. I begged but he said sorry, he just couldn't take the time. I got teary-eyed. I don't know why the autograph was important, but I was really sad.

His limo got stuck at the red light and I was just walking by and I kind of just looked in his direction and held up the albums I was holding. He rolled down the window in the limo and told me to GET IN!!! He signed all four plus a picture I had (the picture sits on my desk at home at all times--I don't even have a picture of my husband there). I tried to remain calm. He was so nice, asking where I was going and who I was there with and if he could drop me somewhere. I don't remember much and I kept saying "I can't believe you let me in here". It was the happiest 7 minutes of my life. They dropped me off about 4 blocks away.

I've been to every subsequent concert in the Philadelphia area--missing none. The recent Tower Theater show with Bonnie Raitt (Philadelphia) and at the E-Center in Camden, NJ are spoiling me and now I find out thanks to your web site that he will be in the area again tomorrow. This is possibly the best year of my life!!!

Russ -- Thanks so much for this web site. I love reading the reviews and love knowing when Jackson is expected to be in my area. I check in about once a week.

Jackson -- if you ever check this site, THANK YOU, for my David Letterman night and for your music. I can't even begin to describe how happy I am when I'm listening to you and euphoric I am just to be in the same room with you at a concert. You are the best.

Washington Post Article

The following article appeared in the Arts section of the Washington Post on Sunday, October 24th accompanied by a photo of Jackson, and one of Bonnie Raitt.
