CONCERT REVIEW: September 30, 2006 at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura, CA

Hi Russ,

Thanks always for all your hard work on this website; really do appreciate what you do for us fans. God Bless you and yours.

Please post the following message about last Saturdays Benefit Concert for the Ventura Hillside Conservancy and the new CD:

I have been to see Jackson at the Ventura Hillside before and was really looking forward to being outside and just enjoying some good music by my favorite artist. I knew he was going to be introducing a group he had recently released a CD with. Jackson came out and did several songs including a couple of my favorites; "A Child In These Hills" and "The Pretender". He looked and sounded great and was very cute in his recovery after an unexpected cough attack (in the middle of a song) that he quickly talked his way out of by thanking modern medicine for their help in keeping him alive. The crowd was happy, I was enjoying a slice of heaven, all was good. He then introduced Fred Martin and the Levite Camp, and everything went from good to great! I had heard about this project on Russ's website and the fact they would be doing remakes of some of Jackson's songs; I had no idea I was going to be in store for such a treat.. Wow! They were incredible! They were a soul filled, brilliantly harmonizing, God praising, Spirit lifting Gospel Choir! A total joy that had me raising hands of praise to the Lord; I was so thrilled!! I believe they only sang "Lives in the Balance" (with an new verse) and "Don't You Want to Be There" together with Jackson. (I've been listening to the CD so much I can't remember which ones they were now). But after only doing a few songs together, Jackson in his normal gracious style, said good-bye and let these powerful young people have center stage. They did a rendition of "Some Bridges" that was just incredible! They also did a song called "Crossroad/Until I found the Lord" which they invited Mark McDonald to do with them; again exceptional vocals with alot of heart and soul. I am a life long fan of Jackson Browne and have lost count of how many times I've seen him in concert. I am also a Christian, choir singing, proud member of a Baptist church and this particular concert was an absolute thrill for me. I was so happy to know Jackson had his hands in supporting this Christian group and producing this beautiful worship CD. The CD has 10 songs (6 of which are Jacksons), it quotes scripture, it's totally God filled, and on the back page of the CD jacket Fred Martin refers to Jackson as "Pastor Browne". I totally encourage everyone to get this CD; it really is just absolutely wonderful. Worship music can bring people to the Lord, and who better to write and produce worship music then our beloved "Pastor Browne". Great job Jackson!

Psalms 40:3
"He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.
many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.

Love and Many Blessings,

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

this is from susan in newport , ri. last january i was at a Newbury comics somewhere in RI, providence area and I bought for 15.99 a used copy of a double cd called best of jackson browne live. it is one cd of live versions of songs mostly with band, For a Dancer is just on keyboard or piano. it includes the pretender, running on empty, in the shape of a heart, the load out and stay, my problem is you, doctor my eyes, and other songs, take it easy, total of ll. it is imported from japan and inlcudes liner notes and lyrics in japanese, and some english i think. it also inlcudes a copy of the next voice you hear best of jb cd. anyway, it is excellent and i guess i was very lucky to get it, and wondering if anyone else out there has it or heard of it. another thing i was wondering is, is the jb on austin city limits ever coming out on video, or is it alreay out? because i was at a borders books a few months ago and saw a lot of austin city limist concerts out on dvd but didn't see jb. i would love to get a copy on dvd or vhs, because when it was on tv, someone was supposed to tape if for me from cable, but it didn't come out, and i made a backup copy using antennae on my tv, which came out very blurry, but it's better than nothing!!!

Hi Susan,

The Best of...Live CD was an official release in Japan and in Australia. It has never been issued elsewhere, but it was readily available in the U.S. as an import when it first came out back in 1996/1998. There is a whole page of this website devoted to it here.

Japan reissued the CD in 2004, so I assume that's the package you found. It's nice to know that it's still available.

There are currently no plans to release the Austin City Limits show with Jackson on video. Although I believe that Austin City Limits has started reissuing some of their past shows on DVD, so it's possible that they will decide to release the one with Jackson at some point in the future. It was definitely an excellent show and I'd love to see an official release of it, but I've heard nothing to indicate that will happen any time soon.

Thanks for writing.

Russ

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

We've seen Jackson in the uk 3 times, really surprised that he does not do more concerts in the USA, especially in W.A. Why is this?

Thanks

Webmaster's Reply:

Hi Amanda,

Jackson is currently working on a new studio album which he hopes to release next year. Then he does plan a full tour. Over the years, he has toured quite a bit in the U.S., but the past few years he's taken a little more time for himself and his family. He does certainly enjoy touring in the U.K. and a few opportunities have come up in recent years, so he's taken advantage of them. Due to distances between cities, touring in the U.S. is a whole different thing and requires a different level of commitment from Jackson.

I'm expecting that we'll see a new studio album and a tour next year.

Thanks for writing.

Russ

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Dear Russ/readers---Does anyone know why Jackson is not in the Songwriters Hall of Fame? I see Henley and Frey are so what the heck is going on with that? I realize Jackson might not care but doesn't he deserve at least as much credit as his compadres? Especially since he has been acknowledged as such a great lyricist?

Good question. Actually, it turns out that Jackson is nominated this year...

According to the website: http://songhall.org/index.php/vote/, Jackson is nominated for the 2007 Songwriters Hall of Fame. Anyone above an associate member can vote, but you have to be a industry person or professional member of an established association to belong to those sections.

DVD REVIEW: MusiCares James Taylor Tribute

I have been a Jackson Browne fan for years and am always looking for anything he is involved in. Last night my husband and I watched the James Taylor Music Cares DVD. (It's very good actually). Do not buy it with the intent of hearing any Jackson Browne or David Crosby. Although they are on stage with Sheryl Crow their distinctive voices cannot be heard. Sheryl sings every verse of Mexico with the subtleties of my Labrador retriever. This did not appear to be lost on Jackson who while walking off stage after not really performing seems to look at the camera and give us a "What was that all about"? Jackson and David are two of my favorites and seeing them on stage together was great. Hearing them would have truly made my evening.

Thanks for listening.

CONCERT REVIEW: October 15, 2006 at Canyon Charter School in Santa Monica, CA

Review of "Jammin In The Canyon"

I normally don't write reviews because of three things that were absent today: Brenda, Allison and Chardonnay. We're usually too busy visiting and drinking wine at these things for me to remember the songs, just that I had a great time. But, being that it was at a grammar school and my two friend were busy, I will do a review.

This was a school carnival basically. There were several acts but the main ones were The English Beat, which got the crowd up dancing, kids and all, just rocking out, and Jeff Young and the Youngsters with Jackson Browne and some guy from Heart, Wind & Fire and some guy from another group that I didn' t know either. Jeff has written a lot of songs with Jackson and was/is in his band and has a terrific group. A lovely man.

It was very informal, Jackson mentioned he'd woken up in Cleveland and took a morning flight to be in California by 3ish and they basically set up the stage right before. Jeff Young did some songs and was wonderful while Jackson endlessly tuned his guitars. Jackson's set was one of the best I've seen, mainly because they're all the songs that I like: Barricades of Heaven (he coughed through that one like at Ventura, perhaps that's a permanent addition), The Pretender, About My Imagination, My Stunning Mystery Companion (with the same story about how the 12th year of dating is hard, etc.), Take It Easy (with the story about the Spanish version being about being not religious, not dangerous and able to eat him like lobster in pink sauce which I was kind of surprised he included at a grammar school!), and Running on Empty. That was supposed to be the finale but the crowd wanted more and after much discussion, they came out but without a clue of what to sing since nothing had been set up.

Jackson asked if there was a horn player in the audience or perhaps a backup singer who's like to help them out but after teaching one of the guitar players the chords to "Next Voice You Hear", which Jackson said was the easiest of his songs to play if you don't know it, they did a really good long improvisation version which morphed into "I Am A Patriot". He did change the line about not being a Democrat to "I am a Democrat". About half the audience had left by then as many people didn't even know who he was and it was basically the parents of the kids at the grammar school. So, the Jackson Browne fans were the ones left. One lady next to me said, "When's James Brown coming on?" But, it was a really good set even though he sounds like he's still battling a cold as he was in Ventura. Plus, coming from Cleveland and being on for over an hour was beyond the call of duty.

We are really lucky that here in Southern California, we have these small informal shows. The adult tickets were $35 and kids were free under 4 and I think it was $10 for older kids so there were a lot of children and families.

We found easy parking but were told we could park at the street above and walk down the steps. Jackson mentioned during the show that he used to run up and down those steps (there are a LOT of steps, coming down would have been easy but walking back up ...) but said he obviously doesn't attempt that any more. I'm his age. I can definitely understand that!

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

What is the name of the CD Jackson released with these gospel singers, I don't think A McPherson mentioned the name of it. Would appreciate it if you could let me know.

Will Jackson be coming to Australia after the release of his new studio album next year?

Happy Birthday Jackson. Don't worry about what those guys from Western Australia said about your beard. I thought you had aged well when I saw you at the Enmore Theatre in Newtown, Sydney, Aus, this year, actually I thought your voice sounds better than I ever remember.

Cheers!

PS Thank you Russ for your hard work.

Webmaster's Reply:

Fred Martin and The Levite Camp's CD, Some Bridges, was released on September 19th. Some Bridges, Fred Martin and The Levite Camp's dynamic debut for Concord Records uniquely blends rock, gospel, blues, soul and jazz into something wholly original and spiritually uplifting. Martin arranges, co-produces (with Jackson Browne), and plays on all 10 tracks, while contributing a few originals of his own and even adding new lyrics to some of Jackson Browne's songs. The electrifying Levite Camp, featuring the dynamic duo lead vocalist, Chavonne Morris and Alethea Mills and is supported by guest appearances by jazz legend Hugh Masekela (whose trumpet is heard on "The Next Voice You Hear"), East L.A.'s Grammy-winning Latin jazz-rock-funk group Ozomatli (on "Lives in the Balance"), modern-day bluesman Keb' Mo' (on a brilliant reworking and retelling of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads") and, of course, Jackson Browne. Produced by Jackson Browne and Fred Martin.

See the EPK for the CD here:

You can purchase it here.

As far as Jackson's tour next year, it's impossible to say for sure because the album hasn't even been made yet and the tour isn't even in the planning stages yet. But usually when Jackson releases a new CD he does a full world tour, and that has most often included shows in Australia. As his son lives there, it's always a good excuse for him to find a few dates down under.

Thanks for writing.

Russ

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Hi this is Sandi. I posted a letter about a year ago regarding a slight confirtation I had with Jackson over him not wanting to autograph a magazine clipping of his picture because it had a caption with a mention of Daryl Hanna. It was a great picture of him that I always carried in my wallet. He was going off on how the media should'nt have the right to comment on his personal life. I was feeling really bad because he was so upset with me. While I pleaded with him to sign it flashbulbs were going off everywhere. This went on for about five minutes. He did finally sign it but only after he ripped the caption off and crumbled it up. My feelings were really hurt at the time(and besides I don't even like Daryl Hanna). In hind sight though I can understand why he was so upset. The media does print alot of things just based on hearsay,so I can't blame him for being upset. All I really want out of this is one of the pictures that were snapped that night. If anyone out there has one please e-mail me at grcubber@aol.com or post it on the web sight. Thanks

Just want to say hi to Mike Springer from Sandi. Spent a little time with you way back in 1980. Remember you were going to play baseball with the Eagles the next day. Sorry I could'nt stay. Jackson did the tribute to the roadies on that tour. That was really neat and awfully sweet of him. That's also when David Lindley and Rosemary Butler were with the band. Does anyone know what they're doing now? Rosemary had such a great voice,I'm surprised she never went out on her own. Thanks for the memories from Sandi

Webmaster's Reply:

David Lindley still records, performs and tours regularly. He and Jackson Browne did some touring together this year and there is talk of releasing a live CD from recordings of these shows sometime in the next year or two. David Lindley has released more than a half dozen albums and his website can be found at www.davidlindley.com.

Rosemary Butler DID "go out on her own" and released a solo ablum called "Rose," though the album is long out of print. She does continue to work as a backup singer for a wide variety of artists including Neil Young's recent "Living With War" album where she was the "Choir Contractor," putting together the wonderful choir that sang backup on that CD. Rosemary's website can be found at www.rosemarybutler.com.

CONCERT REVIEW: October 20, 2006 at Raley Field in Sacramento, CA

How can a music fan get any luckier? The Tom Petty concert in Sacramento was finally advertised, and since he is indicating he will no longer be touring as much, it was a no brainer to get tickets. Then the news was released that Jackson Browne was going to be his special guest. Beyond perfect.

Jackson played for just over an hour, with the band and Catherine Russell. Some of the songs performed were, Everywhere I Go, The Birds of St. Marks, Barricades of Heaven, For America, Culver Moon, Running on Empty & more. It was just great to be able to see them perform again in Northern California.

The only downside - the obvious problem with opening for another act, is the members of the audience that are not there to see Jackson, and are not capable of being considerate to those who are. The woman next to me talked loud & incessantly, and even after asking her to be quiet, she couldn't, and I heard the same comments from other fans.

May as well finish with info about Petty - great concert, he is ever the entertainer. It was his birthday, and he had Stevie Nicks (who looked and sounded great) there as a special guest.

All in all quite a night.

Russ, thank you for the web site.
