Fan Letters & Reviews November 2009 GENERAL FAN COMMENTS: Tickets Available Because of my poor on-line ticket buying skills, I ended up with 2 extra tickets that I would really like to sell to recoup my $125. They are for November 11,2009, Durham, NC Right Orchestra Section 4 Row O Seats 209 and 210 Thanks so much, Submitted by: holt852@aol.com (Ann) CONCERT REVIEW: November 1 at Forum Auditorium in Harrisburg, PA After a weekend of heavy gray clouds and rain shrouding the area and also disappointing (to me) Phillies loses, I got to see Jackson in Harrisburg. What a wonderful night. My son's girlfriend was with me as we traveled to Harrisburg from Philly (all that after she arrived her from Manhattan). She knows I am an avid fan and she wanted to see a show with me (how sweet!) I was thrilled to share my Guacamole tickets with her. The Forum in Harrisburg is beautiful. The venue holds close to 1800 people and there wasn't a bad seat in the house, however it is always hard to compete with guac seats. Jackson looked well and sounded great. Having read the posts on this site, I marvel at his energy. He mentioned that he has been having a lot of fun lately and spoke about playing with his son, Ryan, recently and how wonderful it was to watch him play. He said he looked over at this son and realized that he was playing just as Jackson plays and he was very pleased with passing on the legacy and spoke about that a bit. I would love to see a father/son show someday. It's always fun to watch James Raymond play with David Crosby and see the pride, respect and admiration in David's eyes when his son does a solo. But, back to the show..... Jackson opened with Barricades and from then I will get sketchy.....sorry. These Days Giving That Heaven Away (in fact he squeezed in several Time the Conqueror songs) Farther On Black and White (some one next to me called for that and in fact had many of his requests honored. He had a very strong, clear voice and Jackson was able to discern what he was saying easily) It was great to hear Black and White. I'm not sure I've ever heard it live. A couple of fans brought bouquets of flowers up for Jackson and then someone shouted for his new song "HERE" He was delighted and said we were trying to get on his good side asking for his new stuff. He performed Here and it was beautiful. He took a sip from his metal water bottle and talked about the plastic problem and the garbage in the Pacific and it other oceans. He made an interesting comment stating that everything we use that is disposable seems to made of material that lasts forever. He spoke in terms of "they" did this or that and then corrected himself and said "we" taking some responsibility for his former plastic water bottle use. He echoed what he said in the "rant" about municipal water supplies having to meet a higher standard than the bottled water companies. I believe this all led into Rock Me On The Water Live Nude Cabaret Going Down to Cuba Off Of Wonderland Just Say Yeah Someone called for a Zevon song and he answered with three and said he wanted to start a Zevon cover band so he could here all the stuff because he loves Zevon's stuff and also mentioned that Warren was a genius on the piano so he preferred playing Zevon's stuff that he plays on guitar because he (Zevon) was a sloppy guitar player. The crowd roared. May We Never Be Sick (not sure if that is the correct title) Life Will Kill You Mohammed's Radio Late for the Sky There was an intermission at some point, these are not in order, but Jackson returned with I'm Alive Everyman Jackson seemed to be having problems with his ear piece and at one point unbuttoned his shirt to fish around for the wire at which point an astute fan yelled, "Alright!" The entire place erupted into laughter, including Jackson. He was very comfortable and at ease with the crowd. He mentioned that he has just been on tour with his band and he loved to play with his band but he like to do this too. He said that the Australia/European was really difficult and mentioned it was difficult because everyone had families at home. He said they were dead after that. Sky Blue and Black (slight lyric malfunction at the end along with a comment about teleprompters and MSG) He regaled about MSG and talked about all the acts he'd seen and how with each act he was excited and his "head was about to explode" something to that effect. Jackson the fan talking about his contemporaries. Loved that. He mentioned that Fergie and Mick sang Gimme Shelter and that Mick had to work to keep up with Fergie because she "Danced her ass off" The Pretender Running on Empty For a Dancer ....ok, I'm losing it here...I can't remember. There was more but it's escaping me. I know there were other listers there, please supplement! What a wonderful night and at the end of the night, the temptation of temptations....the bus was parked right up front! I couldn't stop to say how much I appreciated the show because I needed to get the newest addition to the Jackson fan club to the train, which she missed and I ended up driving her to Manhattan! Some how I was so charged from the show that staying awake was no problem.....Got home at 4:30 a.m. (listened to my Phillies lose on the radio, waaaa) I attribute my poor set list memory to exhaustion. What a night! Submitted by: gciuk@aol.com GENERAL FAN COMMENTS: Hi, Any reviews on Jackson Browne's solo acoustic tour yet? My daughter and I plan to see him in Asheville, NC on 11/12. GENERAL FAN COMMENTS: Hi Russ: I am gald to know that Jackson Browne played along with a golden bunch of my favourite musicians/singers/composers, like James Taylor, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Bonnie Raitt and others ( Bruce Springsteen, Simon and Garfunkel, etc.) in New York, at the R&R Hall of Fame Concert. I wish I could have been there, because it should have been a unique and unforgettable experience. Well worth the drive to Scranton. As always, no set-list, lots of shouted requests, and Jackson seemed to be having fun bantering with the audience. There were the occasional lyric mistakes, and halfway through "I'm Alive" he realized he was on the wrong guitar and switched to the correct one -- things that come when you decide what you're going to do on the spot. Several times Jackson turned to his guitar rack, which he referred to as "like a jukebox for me," and walked back and forth determining what guitar he needed for what he wanted to play next. Greetings from the Canadian Rockies! Feel fortunate to have realized a lifelong dream to hear/see/experience Jackson Browne at the magnificent Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, 26 Aug 2009. Bought the tix the day they went on sale and built a vacation around the show! What an evening! Perfect summer night... purely heartfelt music-making, met friendly people sitting around us, and such a smoothly organized venue/event. My wife & I went out for the full day and hiked around the gorgeous surroundings, heard the sound check, and enjoyed a wonderful meal in Morrison, while our anticipation kept growing for the show! Jackson sure seemed to be delighted to be back there on that stage. What a view he must have had. Having female harmony singers again really filled out the tapestry of sound... Was it during "Lives in The Balance" or one of the other political songs... when they layered the soulful intensity of trading vocals... bringing the audience to an exhilarating collective gasp! And so gracious of Jackson to give up the spotlight so often to his compadres on stage! And then being on our feet with almost 10,000 people belting out Take It Easy... a 'lifer' moment! Heard from a number of sources that Red Rocks is a top ten outdoor concert venue in the world... Having had so many incredible concert experiences over the years... it would be a fun challenge to come up with a top ten...Sounded like it was one of his favorite venues to play. Can anyone offer suggestions of other venues that might be in that top ten with Red Rocks? Some other stellar locale for our next Jackson Browne show or that dream Jackson/Bonnie Raitt double bill I have heard so many folks wish for... that we could build our next concert vacation around? Thanks for your dedication to this site Russ and to everyone who writes in to build such a great on-line community! To loosely paraphrase... May the music be the thread that runs like a river through our lives! Submitted by: potatopie25@yahoo.ca (Jonathan L.) CONCERT REVIEW: November 7 at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Brookville, NY November 7 at Tilles Center Concert Review I like Jackson with his band, but love seeing him doing his music solo. He is so skilled at using his voice against the backdrop of notes from his instruments. Setlist: Barricades of Heaven These Days Be Here (new song from movie) I'll Do Anything Two of Me, Two of You Jamaica Say You Will Don't Let Us Get Sick - Warren Zevon Lawyers, Guns and Money - Warren Zevon Sky Blue and Black Rock Me On The Water Something Fine Farther On 2nd Set For Everyman Going Down To Cuba Just Say Yeah Giving That Heaven Away Call It A Loan Fountain of Sorrow Looking Into You Far From The Arms of Hunger Rosie The Pretender Encore: Lady of The Well (with Manny) Take It Easy The lights came on and the crowd started to get up, and the lights went back out. Jackson came out and apologized for the confusion and said he didn't know if he had enough time or not, but didn't care. The union guys said it was O.K. 2nd Encore: Late For The Sky Some comments he made throughout the show were: During his new song he said he had written songs for movies before, but they didn't always get into the movies. He talked about how he wrote a song about a girlfriend, but after it was written he realized it was really more about his previous girlfriend, then sang Jamaica Say You Will. He began telling the audience he had recently lost three close friends, two unexpectedly, when he had to scold some people in the front rows and remind them they were at a concert and should be more respectful. Jackson talked about how Warren Zevon was a great songwriter and how this next song took on new meaning due to those losses. He sang Warren's song, Don't Let Me Get Sick, which was quite powerful. Got upset at somebody else for taking pictures in the front row during a song and actually asked to look at the camera, which the audience member gave to Jackson, it was odd and funny. Probably checking to see if it was recording him. He said they used to take camera's away, but when they tried doing it in Italy it didn't go over so well, so they stopped doing it. He considered playing "I'm Alive" and said he screwd it up the night before, but did practice it and now knew it again. When he played Rosie, he said the drummer was with John Hall's band Orleans, who they were touring with at the time, and the song was not about him. Talked about plastic water bottles destroying the planet and how he now uses a reusable metal water bottle. Mentioned a ring of plastic in the Pacific Ocean the size of Texas and it's effect on fish and other animals which humans than eat. Less consumption of plastic goods by everyone is important. I enjoy reading updates from others during tours. Thanks. Submitted by: petegolf99@nyc.rr.com CONCERT REVIEW: November 9 at Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, MD I have posted before and am always very honest about the quality of Jackson's show. Tonight at the Lyric in Baltimore, Jackson was fabulous!!! I haven't seen other playlists from the tour but it seemed he just bounced around doing whatever song he felt like. His vice was dead on, only one or two froggy moments for the whoe 2 1/2 hour show.My favorites of the night---Don't Let Us Get Sick--a Warren Zevon classic, Farther On, and Lady of the Well. I even liked the Cuba Song from his most recent album. Jackson dropped in a few verses of Buddy Holly's hit--Everyday and played a couple songs I just didn't know. Here is the setlist: Act 1 1---Baricades of Heaven 2---These Days 3---Don't Let Us Get Sick 4---Innocent Bystander ? 5---Everyday 6---For Everyman 7---Farther On 8---Looking Into You 9---Giving Heaven Away 10--Cocaine--cleaned up version 11---Somebody's Baby 12---I am a Patriot Act 2 14---I'm Alive 15---Late For The Sky 16---Fountain of Sorror 17---In the Shape of a Heart 18---Cuba 18---Black and White 19---Turn The World Around ? 20---Running On Empty 21---Pretender 22---For A Dancer 23---Lady of the Well 24---Take it Easy Submitted by: bposner7@gmail.com (Bruce) CONCERT REVIEW: November 6 at Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, NY I attended the show in Kingston NY on November 6, and had a great time. Jackson's voice was wonderful, and he performed beautifully. Like his previous solo acoustic tours, it was like being in his garage with him and his guitars, and watching him just sort of go through some of his favourites. He naturally had a few times where he forgot the lyrics to his own songs, but we've all come to expect and love that. At one point he said that he wanted to see the audience, and asked that the house lights be turned up. Later he again complained that he couldn't see us and said that he'd "give anything" to be able to do so. It was really sweet. I didn't write down the set list, but these are the songs I can remember him playing (not in this order, and there may have been more)
The best news is that there was an audience mike set up on the stage, which I assume means that the audience sounds were being recorded, so maybe we can expect a third solo acoustic album? It will be interesting to see if the songs he plays many times during the tour are the ones he plans to put on this new cd, if such a cd is in the works. He seems to be playing a lot of Warren Zevon songs, so maybe one of them will He didn't do a ton of talking, but did go on for a while about single-use plastic water bottles and how they need to go. He has been advocating for the use of stainless steel water bottles, as most people probably know, but they are still selling water in plastic bottles at the venues where he performs. I imagine there is nothing he or his people can do about that, but I would urge anyone who attends his concerts not to purchase the water there if it's not available in another type of container. He also talked a little about health care reform before he sang Don't Let Us Get Sick. I went to the reception afterwards, having bought my ticket from The Guac Fund, and he was gracious as always, but looked a little tired at the end of it. It was a long show and a long night for him overall, so I can't find fault with him for that. Jackson's staff was great, and so helpful in facilitating the reception. It all went very smoothly. I gifted him with a book, which he seemed to like and I asked him if he wouldn't mind posing for an atypical fan photo. He was game for that, and we tried a shot with me looking angry and him staring at me. That didn't work out because I would up with a funny look on my face and he started to laugh. Then he said (excitedly) "back-to-back, back-to-back"!, and that worked out really well. I'm attaching the picture in case you want to see it. It was so much fun, and I felt really cool, maybe for the first time in my life ever.A good evening all around in a gorgeous venue with great acoustics. I want to send a shout-out to Standing Ovation Guy from the second row, who worked so hard at getting people on their feet, and GTM who added an element of spice to the proceedings. Go GTM! Thanks so much Russ, for keeping us all up to date and for being so great. Yes, it is about a week late but, better late than never! I was so thrilled that Jackson was coming to My home town and started pestering My Husband about it! I would never forgive myself if I missed this show! I am sure you already know the set list and yes people (sometimes rudely) shout out songs! I thought it was really funny when Jackson decided to do Freebird! It was not that bad actually! He always is so accomodating, that it makes you feel you are part of something. Hopefully, he will return to Scranton, Pa. again someday? I looked all over for Mr. Crook S. to say "Thank You "! Nobody seemed to know what the heck I was talking about! So Mr. Crook S., Thanks for the 2 Pitt seats right in front AA! You are awesome!! Jackson was great, as always! We are never disappointed. This night in Kingston was no exception. Jackson sounded and looked fabulous. He truly seemed to be having fun jumping back & forth from guitar to keyboard - sometimes changing his mind when hearing someone call out their requests - (as we've grown accustomed to). The banter with his audience is always fun, spontaneous and thought provoking. He played for a solid 2 1/2 hours with a brief intermission. JB brings to his audience a gift of talent that is always treasured and can never be duplicated. Thank you to Jackson for yet another memorable evening. I first heard Jackson Browne back in the 70's, I was only a small child, my father would play The Pretender album on Sunday mornings, the title track is an all time favorite for various reasons. His albums are highly regarded in my extensive music collection. I have attended a few Jackson shows over the years, 1994, 2008 solo show, so I was excited to grab row D tickets for the show in Asheville on 11/12/09. I am recovering from the flu, so the 3 hour car ride to the show wasn't a highlight. With regards to the show, and it's with a sense of weirdness that I feel I have to write the following. I felt cheated, I felt he was just going thru the motions and I never felt a connection. He made a couple of his usual comedic blunders on some songs, but as the evening progressed they became more common, almost to the point of "Get your act together, this is embarrassing"......While every artist has the right to protect their work, he did seem a little mad regarding some people taking video on their phones etc, there was definitely a tone of contempt in his voice when he addressed the offenders. The usual songs were played, basically a best of, nothing that really set my world on fire. When I bought the tickets months ago, I was under the impression I was going to see the full band, I was actually a little disappointed when I found out it was just him. I attended a solo show last year, so something different would have been nice. Anyways, I am huge fan and have been for years, but after all the effort I made, illness, travel etc, I felt short changed on this show. Something was missing. Yes, 1 or 2 of the songs were great, but overall I felt cheated and kind of sorry I wasted my time, money and effort on a way below par show. Submitted by: dieseljkt@yahoo.com CONCERT REVIEW: November 12 at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, NC Hi Russ, I hope you are doing great! The Orlando concert @ Bob Carr was wonderful. We had great seats. Jackson was directly in front of me when he was playing guitar. I was on the second row where it kinda wraps around the front row. No one between me and Jackson. It is so nice to have a clear view, no arms or people jumping up in front of me. Jackson was clean shaven and was wearing the navy paisley shirt I have seen him wear in photos from previous concerts with blue jeans. We were told no cameras as we entered. I had my camera but didn't take any photos. He came out on stage at 8:05. Jackson stated at the beginning he didn't have a set list and would play what we requested. He appeared very relaxed. The concert ended about 10:40 with about a 30 minute intermission. He didn't play as many songs as I have read from the earlier concerts. His voice was a bit hoarse on Dr My Eyes, he broke for intermission after that song. I did keep a set list Barricades of Heaven Opening Farewell These Days (very nice guitar work) Don't Let Us Get Sick( Jackson talked about Warren Zevon and said he had just recently learned this song) The Pretender Giving That Heaven Away ( Jackson told a story about the woman this was written about. He was with her once 35 years ago and never saw her again. She had written him a letter a few years ago telling him what she had done in her life since and that had inspired this song. Sounded like quite a day!) Fountain Of Sorrow Rock Me On the Water ( Jackson talked about keeping the waters clean, and talked at length about plastic and what its toxins are doing to us every time we take a sip from a plastic bottle. Also about the fish eating tiny particles of plastic then we eat them How ironic it is that we created to be a throw away doesn't go away ) Late For The Sky Doctor My Eyes Intermission I'm Alive Bright Baby Blues In the Shape of A Heart Black and White Rosie ( he started laughing while singing this) I Hear Your Heart Beat ( He said no ever asks for this, so he honored the request and it was very good) Naked Ride Home Just Say Yeah ( Jackson spoke at length about his girlfriend and their great relationship. How you have to work at staying in love. How great she is, talented . He said she had mentioned recently she is the now the oldest girl he has ever been with. They keep it light. He said they might get married or they might not.) Running On Empty ( He said he usually plays this at the end,but has a rule if anyone requests it before he plays it) Sky Blue and Black Before the Deluge I Am a Patriot (Jackson added maybe I am a Democrat now, after singing I ain't no Democrat) Encore Take It Easy (He called Manny Alvarez out to play guitar with him) He had sixteen guitars on stage, he asked for his E flat ( I think) They couldn't find it. Has anyone ever heard him play For a Rocker solo acoustic? I requested it, he didn't play it. I have never heard him play it or The Road which I had hoped to hear. I would encourage everyone to go to a concert on this tour. Thank you Russ for the great site. I always enjoy reading the concert reviews and updates. Jackson's show in Miami Beach was great. It was the last show before a week off for Thanksgiving so he was in good spirits. I did not keep a set list but I was sitting in front of the sound board coordinator. During the intermission, I asked the guy if he worked for the theater or for Jackson & he said he travels with Jackson. I then asked him if Jackson ever plays a song that surprises him. He said "Yeah, he did "Walking Slow" tonight and he rarely plays that one". Jackson noticed a psychedelic flashing mural in the theater and he said it reminded him of his years from 1965 to 1969. He then played a song that mentioned hippies and people who used to drop acid (or LSD). I don't know the name of the song but it was appropriate. ( Anyone know the title to that song?) "Going Down To Cuba" got a great reaction because Miami is "Little Havana". At one point he was chatting while on his piano how he watches a TV show just because they play the Beach Boys "God Only Knows" as their theme song. I yelled out "PLAY IT". Jackson said he can't play it on the piano so I yelled "PLAY IT" again. He said OK and then picked up a guitar and attempted to play it. He made it through one verse and said he didn't have Carl Wilson's vocal range. But he tried! If you are a Jackson fan DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR!. As Jackson said at the beginning of the show: "There is no set list tonight" The spontaneity of the concert was fabulous. Thanks again Russ.
