CONCERT REVIEW: May 4, 2009 at Cirkus in Stockholm, Sweden

When is Jackson ever goin to sing Sky Blue And Black in Sweden. Ok, so I didn't call out for it this time. But then In my oppinion it is one of the most moving songs of his. And I was hoping he had included that in his set list.

Still it was like a revival meeting for those who already has been saved. He sang alot of song we came to listen to, as well as some of the newer ones.

He always moves me with his music and those wonderful lyrics. Didn't bring a pen and paper so I can't remember all the songs he did. But here are the ones I can remember.

Barricades Of Heaven
Boulevard
Everywhere I Go
For Everyman
Late For The Sky
The Pretender
Rock Me On The Water
I Am A Patriot
Doctor My Eyes
Going Down To Cuba
Time The Conqueror
Running On Empty
Lives In The Balance
Fountain Of Sorrow
Just Say Yeah
Giving That Heaven Away
I'm Alive
Something Fine
Off Of Wonderland
Bright Baby Blues
Take It Easy

You know Brad Paisley's right it takes alcohol to make "white people dance." I was the only one ,as I could see from my fourth row seat, to get up on my feet to TIE. When I hear a good song I just want to dance. And as I "danced" in my chair I looked with envy to the background singers standing there moving their body to the music.

It was as great as ever. Jackson is still the greatest rockpoet in my book, and I look forward to see im next time.

CONCERT REVIEW: May 5, 2009 at Amager Bio in Copenhagen, Denmark

Concert review May 5th 2009, Amager Bio, Copenhagen, Denmark

My wife, son and I went to the concert yesterday in Amager Bio, Copenhagen. The venue is rather small but with a great atmosphere and acoustics. Although we didn't arrive until 20 minutes to 8, we could walk right up to the stage, and there were lots of space throughout the evening. The audience (except for my son) was mainly in their 50/60'es and from what I could hear around me, everybody was having a great evening.

Jackson and the band entered the stage on schedule and went right into Boulevard - the "usual" opener, which I'm delighted he has taken out from the gem again. As far as I know, it's been many years since the last time it appeared regularly on the setlist. The 1st set was pretty much standard for the tour, except for Take it easy, which quite a few in the audience yelled out for...

The absolute highlight of the set - and probably the concert - was Fountain of sorrow; the dynamics of that song just keeps getting better and when the last Fountain-of-sorrow part builds up - the uuhh-uuhhh chorus turns to aahh-aahh and eventually Mark takes it away on the guitar, it seems like everything just lifts off to another level... The applause wouldn't stop after that song.

The new songs was well received, people even shouting out for "The Cuba Song"

Doctor/Imagination made up a very strong ending of the 1st set - even with a funny intermezzo, see later.

Drums of war started 2nd set. The song is definitely not one of my favorites from the new record, but it actually came out okay when played live. After that Jackson decided to play Culver Moon which was not on the setlist, but after that, they stuck to the list.

Highlights of 2nd set... well many...Lives in the balance is a very strong performance with its very acoustic approach giving so much space for the harmonies, and - speaking of harmonies - the "boys choir" in Rosie is something to watch and hear! Going down to Cuba is a lovely song - performed with such compassion, which just makes you want to go there right away. And (of course) Running on empty. I could see/hear that song every night for 10 years in a row without ever getting tired of it!!!

I'm a Patriot was the only encore, perhaps a little disappointing, however it was an extended version ...and we got take it easy in the 1st set anyway, so no complaints from here.

A few words must be said about the band. It's simply a delight to follow the musicians giving their small tid-bits to every song. In between two lines of a song, you'll always hear small fills, not overshadowing the song, but just adding to the total picture. It's amazing how these people work together! Professional, skilled and sympathetic.

Also this band is able (with the support of the venues great acoustics) to play at rather low volume compared to most other bands, making it possible to recognize all details and really emphasize the dynamics of the songs.

Two things distracted Jackson somehow during the night: People yelling out for songs, and people flashing him and "videophoning" him.

Some people kept on shouting for I'm a patriot, even though Jackson told them, he was gonna play it later. So at one point he addressed the issue, saying that he'd realized, that the no-setlist solo concerts actually was an act of laziness from his side (not having to "make a plan"), but this time, with the band, they were gonna play the songs THEY wanted to! (And to the patriot-shouters, he said, that it would be half an hour, before he would play it, so they could go out to the bar for a while, if they wanted...)

Many times during the concert, he was obviously distracted by flash photographers and people with cellphones filming him. Actually at one point in "Doctor" he jumped up from the piano and literally ran to one side of the stage, where he saw somebody filming him (he later said, it was his cousin...). In 2nd set, this female photographer ploughed her way to center stage and started filming him with several cameras and a cell-phone. At one moment - in the midst of a song - Jackson took 2 steps forward, grabbed the cell (with which she was filming him), put it in his pocket - and continued to sing. The girl called her colleague to help her and started waving with some press-card. After the song she (obviously having no sense of humor whatsoever, even though Jackson tried to keep the conversation with her in a good spirit) shouted at Jackson that "she had permission and blah-blah-blah", again waving the press card in front of him. Hilariously, Jackson took the card from her, and without looking at it put it in his pocket as well!

Well - that's probably the inevitable result of Jackson always being polite and friendly and also result of his no-setlist solo concerts. It's however no wonder, that those things distract him - perhaps an advice could be to address the issues at the beginning of the concerts, because 99,9% of the audience would respect it then, I'm sure.

Anyway - yesterday there was no way that it could spoil the evening, and it's actually not fair, that such i...s take up so big a part of this review. However my point is how well Jackson deals with it... And all together, it is such a pleasure to be in the company of Jackson and the band. Please keep on doing this - we'll be there next time again.

CONCERT REVIEW: April 23, 2009 at Circus Krone in Munchen, Germany

I've been in Munich in 23.04.2009. This was the best concert I've ever seen in my life. I thank the Lord because it was possible for me to be in "Circus Krone" that night. I will never forget some of my best and most precious hours of my life. "Fountain of sorrow" - I love the song since I heard it the first time, but it was incredible to hear it that night: These were moments in heaven, this was music, sounds and emotions not from this world ....... And the song "Far from the arms of hunger" tasted salty too, this was music straight from paradise. Thank you, Jackson, God bless(ed) you.

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Hi Russ,

If this is inappropriate (no can do). I will understand.

Everyone, don't forget to bring a can. Last year when I went to a Jackson Browne concert there were not many people that brought cans. I also spoke to someone the next day who went to the same concert and he knew nothing about the can drive. I wish it could be printed on the tickets.

Just imagine, if every Artist would ask their fans to bring a can to benefit the local shelters, what a dent it would make in the lives of those of us that are hungry. Don't mean to cry, but because of surgery I had this year, I won't be able to carry a load like last year. JB said, "Don't be afraid to go out on a Limb, that is where the Fruit are" (not sure if I'm quoting this correctly) Go out on that limb, if you can. People from all walks of life could use a can this year.

This site is about JB, so I will make a few more related comments. One of my favorite song is Hold on, Hold Out. However, I love all his music. I hope the next CD includes more romantic (s healing) music. His voice is unique.

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Hi Russ,

I'm sorry that lately I'm only give bad news about Jackson Browne. After 37 years or more following his career, it is hard for me to do it but it is the truth. I post here that the last album is by far his worst job. His name and reputation ddidn't deserve an album like this.

Now the new is that Mr. Bronwe decided to cancel the show he had to make yesterday in Madrid. The reason seems to be the low tickets sales but it is surprising that he decided to cancel only 24 hours before the show and the communication channels were very poor. In fact many people even those who came from other cities didn't know it until the concert hour.

In the other hand, I don't know if this is reason enough to cancel the show. I remember Iain Matthews explain a lot of times when he introduce the song Darkness Darkness, how he did a show in USA for only 7 people. I prefer to think there are other reasons but if things have happened as official communication tells, it will be an unbelievable attitude in a professional artist. Sorry Mr. Browne, maybe audience needs less politic and more music.

Hi Russ. Jackson's concert at the Palu in Barcelona was my 4th concert since march 23rd 2009. It was the highlight of the 4 I attended.Jackson was in great form on the night. He was very chatty throughout the concert in both spanish an english. He said he was so pleased to be back in the Palu De La Musica.Boulevard was the first song of the night and when it was finished, Jackson looked at the set list and said that it was'nt the set list he had planned on doing!! After a few mins he went into the barricades of heaven and at the end of that song new set lists were put out by all the microphones!!.Jackson dedicated For A Dancer to the guitarist Stephen Bruton who he said had passed away a few days ago.In introducing Just Say Yeah Jackson said that this was a song he wrote for his partner Dianna who was in the audience and it was her birthday!!. He said the song was a question about a question.

Barcelona were playing in football that night also.During the show Jackson said that he had an announcement to make! Barcelona were winning 3:0!!!.Jackson just did'nt want to finish up in Barcelona. The first encore was I am a patriot, then the load-out and stay. GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Hi Russ

Please notice and if you want you can add it as note, that the band during "I'm A Patriot" uses to insert a short part of the song "It's Your Thing" by the Isley Borther.

Jeff Young comfirmed me this after the show in Bologna.

CONCERT REVIEW: May 16, 2009 at Auditorio Centro de Congresos in Murcia, Spain

Hi Russ!

(Note - I am sorry, but this one is going to be long...)

I am still euphoric and feeling the best emotions picked up during the evening of last May16th in Murcia! Not only I had the rare opportunity of catching Jackson Browne playing live with his band, but above all that, I materialized an eternal dream kept since my teenager times: to know personally my long time music idol, after more than 30 years waiting for an unlikely chance!

Well, the fortune was on my side that night, and after a great and unforgettable concert, I managed to meet JB, have a few words and shake his hand, asking him to stop by in Portugal ( I think he never visited my country) for a concert during his next European tour. I was the last fan following him before he entered in the bus (where the members of the band were still waiting), and Jackson even answered my question, asking me: "but then, what city must I choose?" - "Lisbon", I said, promptly! What can I say about this man that hasn't been mentioned yet by dozens of other experienced fans that also had the happy chance to get acquainted with JB? I also loved and have been devoted to Jackson's music and words all my life, and his material has been one of my most faithful companions in every occasions, but now I met the man himself and I found in him, the most kind, cool and caring (for his fans) guy I ever met in the music business. A true gentleman who, after almost 3 hours on stage, dedicated some time to his anxious fans, who kept outside the Auditorium, waiting for autographs, pictures, some conversation, anything you name it. And Jackson, so patiently, gave attention to everybody (myself and my wife also included, and we got privileged, taking some "golden" photos with him). I am so impressed with the composure and friendship showed by JB, that I haven't enough words to thank him for some of my happiest moments as a music fan, but also as a citizen of this troubled world, where men like Jackson Browne are so rare, so precious and so important!...

This was only my second live experience in a Jackson Browne concert, after my first attendance in London, on November 1, 2004, during his solo acoustic tour. I felt quite fascinated and satisfied then, as it normally happens with our first love, but this time in Murcia was even better, for several reasons, mainly:

- The Place and Venue: nice and peaceful Spanish town, beautiful weather, and an excellent Auditorium, with great sound and acoustics, very, very comfortable, and above all I got seats at the 5th row in front of the stage, with an excellent view.

- The Band: this is a great and skilled band where the musicians are very experienced and professional, and feel/play better than anybody else, the music of JB. The inclusion of those two girls, Alethea and Chavonne , ( with whom I also got a beautiful photo...) is a clever move by Jackson, since they give an added value to many songs, where their rich voices sound really great!

- The Audience: even considering that the large Auditorium was far for being full, the audience was composed by true, polite and loyal fans that seemed to know well the work of JB. Jackson did mention that last time he performed in Murcia there were more people in the audience, but he wasn't very bothered with that, because the place would become now more intimate, and in these occasions things usually run in a better way!

- The Mood: Jackson and the band looked to be in a good mood that night, playing in a cool wave, interacting with the public (which behaved considerably well in terms of not taking unauthorized pictures or flashes during the show) and delivering the music in the best possible way.

- The Set list: well, the set list didn't change much from previous concerts, and had the usual mix of some classic songs with six others from the new album, Time the Conqueror. Curiously, the new songs played live, with some new arrangements and those girl voices, sound even better than in the record (I guess some other reviewers had said that before). Just one remark I can not avoid to make: the song "Late for The Sky" (definitely one of my all time favourites that I was hoping to listen that evening) was mentioned in the original set list (that I got from the stage at the end of the concert), and positioned before "The Pretender", but Jackson didn't sing it, I don't know why! Here is the complete set list from Murcia, May16:

First Set: (Started 21h40mn)

1. Boulevard
2. Barricades of Heaven
3. Fountain of Sorrow
4. These Days
5. Time the Conqueror
6. Off the Wonderland
7. Live Nude Cabaret
8. Giving that Heaven Away
9. Doctor My Eyes/ 10. About my Imagination

Intermission: 20 minutes

Second Set: (Started 23h 00mn)

1. Something Fine
2. I Am Alive
3. Lives in the Balance
4. Going down to Cuba
5. Just Say Yeah
6. Your Bright Baby Blues
7. The Pretender
8. Running on Empty

Encore 1:
9. The Load Out/Stay
10. I Am a Patriot

Encore 2:
11. Take It Easy

Concert ended by 24h 20mn

- The Man and The Singer/Musician himself: It is great for us, hard fans, to see how well JB keeps his figure and look, as well as his voice and performance on (or outside) stage. As a matter of fact, when the show started and he approached the edge of the platform, I wondered: That guy still looks like a "boy"! Jackson doesn't really seems to have his real age, and even after so many shows he still delivers his music and messages as he ever did, filling the room with his skill and kindness.

Many thanks for you excellent work with this site Russ (I check it everyday, when I turn on my computer), allowing so many Jackson Browne fans to share their emotions, review their experiences, and strengthen up a chain of common feelings about various issues. You are also very responsible for the pleasure we get with our "addiction" to JB, and as I told you once (and do not mind to repeat it), you would deserve several "Grammys" for this category, if it would exist...

CONCERT REVIEW: May 21, 2009 at London Royal Albert Hall in London, England

Brilliant Jackson at the Albert hall. Flawless performance from everybody. Boulevard opened and Barricades got thrown in as second with Fountain of Sorrow making it a perfect start.. When the crowd began to call out Jackson said he wouldn't respond but then changed his mind and threw in Jamaica. Time on My Side was good but the gig wallowed a bit with the new stuff since the audience didn't know it as well. He also pulled each song back to finish when the band was good enough to go out in a blaze of glory on each song. But by half-time we thought this was going to be a good night. Second half was awesome with Late For the Sky surpassing even For A Dancer on the slower stuff and and with two encores, nearly three hours playing time and a nice Load Out/Stay to finish, who could possibly complain. I left singing I Am A patriot, never one of my favourites before, but the new reggae style arrangement was great.

CONCERT REVIEW: May 21, 2009 at London Royal Albert Hall in London, England

This was the second night Jackson was in London, the first being 12 April - so 6 weeks ago!

I was at both concerts. At the start of last night's concert, Jackson was really pleased to be back in London, and the last night of the tour. He asked, by show of hands, how many of us were at the 12 April show, so an awful lot of people put their hands up. He was really appreciative, and said that they'd be playing some different songs tonight for us!

He started with Boulevard, and went into the same setlist as previously. There were a few times when he deviated away from the setlist and took requests (I can't remember what the song was - Fountain of Sorrow?) and the band disappeared off stage. He introduced the band fairly early in the evening, and said that Jeff Young was his 'favourite singer'.

There was a funny episode before the end of the first half, when Jackson spotted the guy on the front row had a light shining incredibly brightly in his eyes and couldn't see a thing. Jackson had his roadie go and get some sunglasses for him as they were swapping over guitars. The guy on the front row tried them on.... but as Jackson was strumming away, watching, he said, "I just realised, those are prescription sunglasses, you won't be able to see a thing!" So they were obviously Jackson's own sunglasses (he did say that he'd have to give them back at the end!) but the man had his own sunglasses that he wore instead. The road crew came out during the interval and turned off the offending light for him.

Jackson also talked about how they got this last London show - it was Eric Clapton's night off from his 20 night run at The Royal Albert Hall, and part of the deal of having this night, was that JB's crew had to use some of EC's kit, so that they didn't have to move it. JB dedicated a song to him (WHY can't I remember?) and said it was nice to be able to play "in Eric's living room" which, it kinda is!

At the end of the show, Jackson said that the last gig in London had so many additions to the set list half way through, that they ran out of time and couldn't play everything they wanted to, so tonight they WERE going to play everything. He said that we had cast a spell on them tonight, so he kept on playing, and all the audience came down the front (which I don't think they did last time?) and everyone was standing for Running on Empty and he did The Loadout and Stay. We were all really getting into it, he sounded fantastic, although you could tell that they'd been on the road for 3 months and wanted to get back to their families (actually, he said as much) but were pleased to go. In The Loadout, he changed the lyrics to, "We've got The Last King on video..." and "Do the gig in Chicago" changed to "Get to He-e-eathrow". I think there were a few other changes as well. It was very funny, and he was having fun with it too. Like last time, he told us to take good care of each other. And he was gone.

I came away feeling very glad that I'd attended again. I nearly missed this concert because I didn't get tickets in time, but I found one at the last minute and it was brilliant!

Thanks again Jackson. :)

  • 1st set Jamaica was an impromptu request, 4 new songs in a row deflated proceedings a little, better if they were broken up.
  • 2nd set Superb, For a Dancer was outstanding.
  • Encore was also much more upbeat/ longer than April & finished the gig off properly, unlike April when it was flat because of time limitations.

CONCERT REVIEW: May 18, 2009 at Auditori de Girona in Girona, Spain

Although I have seen Jackson many times this was the first occasion that I have seen Jackson outside the U.K. I caught him earlier on this tour at The Royal Albert Hall, London and although that was a great concert this was very much better. This is a great venue, a lovely hall with great sound. Sadly the hall was only 70% full. The audience appeared younger than those I have seen in the U.K. This was the first time that Jackson had played Girona and he remarked that he had enjoyed a day off in the city and he had taken the opportunity to eat. He and the band appeared relaxed throughout and seemed to really enjoy themselves.

The set list was similar to those reported in other postings.

First set:
Boulevard
Barricades Of Heaven - the ending was particularly fine.
Fountain Of Sorrow - Jackson was in fine voice on this and throughout the evening
These Days
Time The Conqueror
Off Of Wonderland
Live Nude Cabaret
Giving That Heaven Away
Doctor My Eyes/About My Imagination - this was fabulous particularly the female singers

Interval

Second set:
Something Fine
I'm Alive
Lives In The Balance
Going Down To Cuba
Just Say Yeah
For A Dancer - stunning solo version
Rosie
Your Bright Baby Blues
The Pretender
Running On Empty
Take It Easy (Encore)
The Load Out/Stay (Encore)
I Am A Patriot (Encore)

Continued thanks for the great site Russ.
