CONCERT REVIEW: May 3 at Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo, Japan

The concert last night (may 3) at Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo was spectacular, and I hope that someone had the presence of mind to write down the set list. Jackson was in very good spirits and appeared to enjoy the Japanese audience. In fact, he responded to four requests, for "Something Fine", "Rosie", "Rock Me on the Water" and "Sky Blue and Black". I suspect that unlike other places, there are relatively few audience requests in Japan, as a Japanese audience is typically very quiet while an artist in talking, and it's out of character for Japanese to shout out requests in a public place. There were some charming exchanges: "LOCK ME ON ZA WALA!" "What did you say?" "LOCK ME ON ZA WALA" "Oh, Rock me on the Water. OK." "SOMUSING FINE!" "You want to hear that?" "YAH!" "Alright."

Long show, three hours including the intermission, and every "big" Jackson Browne song (with the exception of "Before the Deluge") was played: "For Everyman" was played as part of the second encore before "Doctor My Eyes".

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

I wanted to respond to comments by ahernandez [posted last month]. Are views of peace, harmony, and looking out for our fellow human beings such a bad thing? Don't you think that the world would be a better place if all the world leaders thought along the same lines as Jackson?

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

I was about to hit the keys to buy my 4 tickets for the July 8th concert in NJ, when a horrifying sight hit me. The Web Page had the logo "This event sponsored by Clear Channel Entertainments". These are the people who banned the Dixie Chicks from 1200 radio stations they own, for saying "Just so you know, we are ashamed President Bush is from Texas." And the Dixie Chicks said that because they opposed a war, started by Pres Bush, that was also opposed by the UN and 63 Democracies around the world. Jackson, you are the man who wrote "Lives in the Balance". How can your fans live with Clear Channel as your business partner. Could you change....in future?

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

I wanted to comment on the Clear Channel issue. I doubt if Jackson has much choice but to partner with CC-since they own so many of the venues and the radio stations that play his music. I have faith that Jackson will continue to speak out on important issues, regardless of business necessities. Jackson has my loyalty because of his music, his philanthropy, and his political activism for many causes that I believe in. The music-affiliated corporate giant that is bugging me these days is Ticketmaster; while I appreciate the opportunity to order tickets on-line, it seems outrageous that they can charge over $10 for such a "convenience". Anyway, I'm looking forward to the summer tour and hope Jackson and the band are enjoying some well-deserved down time after the extensive touring of the last few months.

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Dear Russ,

some people wonder why Jackson is making business with quite questionable companies. A few weeks ago I wondered why he was doing dozens of shows in countries which supported Bush's war policy compared to just 1 show in France and 2 in Germany: - Did he not want to show solidarity with countries opposing this policy? - Or did he think France and Germany are anti-war anyway, so there is nothing left to gain? - Did he just have no choice because his promoter, probably being British decided on the venues? Actually I am not interested in an answer. Before questioning his decisions I think I'd better ask myself: - What can I do to make this place worth living on? - Do I choose products that are environment-friendly, etc.? But let's face it, we sometimes make strange compromises for different reasons, e.g. the sake of convenience, ignorance, money, fun. Before we ask others for decisions that are politically correct I rather question myself in my decisions on everyday life. I am thankful that Jackson keeps me musically and mentally alive, and I am not sure if he feels comfortable being regarded as some kind of superhuman idol.

Kind regards,

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Hi Russ

Just to pick up on an issue raised by a recent correspondent - re the apprporiateness of Jackson doing extensive tours in countries where the governments have been offering support to the war in Iraq. As your correspondent has rightly concluded - this is an irrelevance. The views of any government are no guarantee of the views of its people - if they were then Jackson would have cancelled his American tour some months back. I have seen him play several times in the UK over the last 20 years and was able to take in three shows on his recent tour. It has been interesting to observe changes both through his comments at shows and through his music. I clearly remember at the Lives In The Balance tour concert (London Hammersmith Odeon) 1986??? Jackson briefly got on his "soap box" to make a number powerful points about what Reagan was getting up to in Central America. Some guy in the audience was getting impatient and shouted "Get on with the music Jackson". Jackson's response was to rise to the bait .... "If what I am saying is disturbing you then that is why I am saying it!" Actually - I don't think he was so much disturbed - just probably anxious to hear as much great music as possible! However, it does underline the point that if you wish to make a political stand then there is no purpose in preaching to the converted - you have to get in amonst those who see the world differently to yourself.

It seems since then that Jackson has been more prepared to let the music do the speaking - Looking East tour (Manchester 1996) - "this is where I usually get on my soap box - but I don't do that so much now - at least not in concerts" or words to that effect. Even on this tour his comments were restricted to "You know I'm really against this war in Iraq" and a comment about how lucky we are to have the BBC "because you would think that from our (US) media that everyone in the States supports this war - at least you have all views properly represented." Howeever, away fom his concerts - in the press and in interviews he has been as vocal as ever. At the end of the day Jackson is a musician and that is his job. As it happens he also holds strong and sincere views on political, social and environmental matters. If in the course of doing his work he either knowingly or unwittingly seems to be offering "support" to countries with unacceptable foreign policies or music moguls who exercise their power in the most reprehensible ways - then that is the price he pays for not being prepared to shut up. I'm sure that all visitors to this web site would prefer to hear Jackson loud and clear than to live in a world devoid of his music and his ideas because of the need to tip toe around certain sensitivities. Yes there may be concerns about the views/behavior of those his work must bring him into contact with but I believe Clear Channel Entertainment must be fully aware of Jackson's poitical views. He has never been afraid to stand up for what he believes in and on the Iraq issue he has never been less than totally forthright - as CCE have not managed to gag him it seems that Jackson has won hands down. At his second Manchester concert back in March he unexpectedly inluded "Till I Go Down" on his set list - I think that just about sums it up and is the best two fingers he could give to the likes of Clear Channel Entertainment.

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

I'm in a bind. I live in Florida and I'm a big JB fan. He doesn't get down here very often so I typically have to travel to see him. I made plans to go to Chicago in June to see the Show Sunday June 22, 2003 at the Rosemont Theater (just outside Chicago). However, due to a family issue I'm unable to attend the event. I have two tickets that I purchased from Ticket Master. With fee's included I spent 120.00. the face value is 50.00 per ticket. I'd like to get 80.00 for the pair and I'll take care of shipping. Could you post this somewhere on the site to help me out? I would appreciate it. If any one would like to contact me about the tickets have them use my personal e-mail: pretender2352@yahoo.com

The seats are Section 208 Row A seat 13 and 14 Here is the web-address to view the seats http://rosemont.com/visiting/theatre.shtml.

Thank you,
