Hello Russ.

I got your name from the unofficial JB site and the Cafe and wanted to let you know of an article on JB. When I was on the net the other day, I found an article from October 2002 in Austin, TX with a radio station, which I thought was pretty good. You probably have already seen it, but if you haven't here is the site:

Thanks for all your work on behalf of the fans!

I've just stumbled across a 1976 one hour Insight Radio programme on the BBC radio website. The programme is a John Tobler Jackson Browne special. It starts with the Tom Rush version of Shadow Dream Song and works its way through to the release of The Pretender. It features extensive interviews with Jackson.

You should go to BBC radio - 6 music - listen again - time tunnel - Tuesday. I guess this programmre will stay up until 14/15 June.

Hope this provides some enjoyment for visitors to the web site. I'm really looking forward to the UK tour when I hope to catch him in Glasgow, London and Birmingham

Hi. I want to thank you for maintaining this great web site. I personally would be lost without it! I check it several times per week for new info! Somehow, the April VH1 appearances slipped by me. Does anyone know if they will be rebroadcast or how to get a copy? {Or any other TV interviews!) thanks!

By the way, jackson's solo performance in San Jose Calif. in March was so unbelievably wonderful--warm and soulful!

CONCERT REVIEW: June 12 at Denver Botanic Gardens/Chatfield Nature Preserve in Littleton, CO

Hello,

I found your web site today and I really do appreciate the effort put into it.

I saw Jackson last weekend at the Denver Botanic Garden in Chatfield. This is in Littleton Colorado. It was the first outdoor concert venue the park had put on. Jackson played solo. What a thrill. The show featured Jackson Browne, Nancy Griffith, who I am a huge fan of also, and Willie and Lobo. What a beautiful day. I have been a fan of Jackson Browne for at least 30 years. We are very close in age. We have sons that are the same age; 31 and we both grew up in Los Angeles. We've both lost spouses to death. I have always felt a sense of familiarity with him. albeit, in my mind! After the many many shows I have been honored to attend, I finally got to exchange a few words with Jackson, thank him for the years of enjoyment, and compare childhood locations. I must say he was so gracious to meet and greet a very small number of fans who hung around after the show. He was so sweet. He sounded good that day, although, the altitude and wind dried his throat out a bit. He looks very fit and healthy and I will never forget his kind eyes.

Just wanted to share....off to daydream now.

CONCERT REVIEW: June 20 at Chastain Park in Atlanta, GA

Morning Jackson

My husband & I went to your concert last night at Chastaine Park in Atlanta, LOVED EVERYTHING you played. Over all I thought the audience was rather polite except where we were sitting. In front of us, Yuppies, spending too much time with their Champagne, dinner and kisses. Behind us, Rednecks, trying to figure out where acoustics fit in to rock & roll, in their normal vocal tones.

I realize that this has no reflection on you personally but of today's audiences, whom lack training, in "collective class". Maybe you could write a song, just about that. Dam, why are we so obsessed with "talking", one day we'll wake up with out ears.

So what I'm getting at is, that there are many of us whom would truly love to be, one on one, with you. We, whom listen with our hearts not our jaws. Please at least consider... after you do the Chastain gig (next year), would you stay an extra night and meet your true admires at the Variety Play House (where talking is personally prohibited)

You're VERY SPECIAL to me, in every word you share. One day I hope to meet you, Up Close and not behind a verbal curtain. God Bless your love of music. Thank you.

Just another fan,

CONCERT REVIEW: June 20 at Chastain Park in Atlanta, GA

This was the third time that I've seen Jackson in his solo acoustic format and probably the best. We flew down from Baltimoreto see him at Chastain Park- what a venue! Small, intimate and they let you bring in your own food and "beverages". Southern hospitality at it's finest. Our seats were right next to the stage and we could see Jackson back stage just a few minutes before show time. I started waving my arms in the air and he acknowledged seeing me by pointing. Then I waved him out and he put one finger in the air gesturing that I'll be out in a minute. When he came out he said that it sounds like you're glad to see me, then walked over toward us and looking right at us said "and you gray beards are probably really happy to see me". He was sporting a full beard that was all gray, and, I have a gray beard too.

He opened with Barricades of Heaven and he sounded great (I hope that someone posts the set list because I can't remember every song that he did). The crowd wasn't as "rowdy" as far as calling out songs - don't get me wrong, people were yelling out songs but not nearly as crazy as the other acoustic shows that I've attended. At one point, people were yelling out songs that he didn't want to play and I yelled For A Dancer, and he said now were getting there - but went into Before the Deluge. He eventually did play For A Dancer. Another time he said that everyone wants to hear his popular stuff but that "his people" were in the audience yelling for songs about death and sorrow and he has to take care of his people - thanks, Jackson.

One of the workers who we talked to the night before (Keb Mo played at Chastain on Saturday night) saw me and asked how many JB t-shirts I had. I asked if she had seen Jackson and she said yeah, and, strangely enough (??? She doesn't know Jackson) he talked to a bunch of his fans at the gate during the sound check for about 20 minutes. She said that she's been working there for several years and never saw any artist ever talk to their fans like that.

He mentioned how much he liked Chastain and that it looked like everyone was done eating - but said that he was still hungry. He really seemed to enjoy talking and joking with the crowd. Jackson appeared very relaxed yet energetic.

He did play Late for the Sky, The Pretender, Looking East, Sky Blue and Black, Take It Easy, Call It A Loan, I Am A Patriot, Looking Into You... again, can't recall all of the songs, but he sounded rested. When he came out for his second encore he mentioned that they are very strict with curfews here, but one of the venue managers said that he could play one more song. He spoke about his "Stunning Mystery Companion" and then played the song - outstanding show.

After the show, we waited for Jackson outside the backstage gate with about 10 other JB fans who were feeling no pain. Everyone was talking about the show and sharing stories of when they met Jackson. We met Jackson after the induction concert at the Beacon Theatre and he was as nice and pleasant as could be. He thanked us for waiting to see him. Finally, a van left - no Jackson. A truck left - no Jackson. The bus then went through the gate and stopped -Jackson is down on the bottom step waiting for the doors to open. One of his handlers tells Jackson not to get off the bus. He waved the crowd back and got off the bus. He immediately thanked everyone for hanging out to see him. I said something about gray beards and Jackson acknowledged me by reaching over a few fans to shake my hand. Jacksonis so gracious and humble - he continued to thank us, talked with everyone as if they were best friends and allowed almost everyone there to be photographed with him. When he was stepping back toward the bus to leave, one girl yelled out that her sister had come a long way to see him and Jackson interrupted her "Where's your sister? Get her over here" and within seconds she was being photographed with Jackson. What a class act!!!

This guy's music has had an impact on my life but the way he treats his fans is also making a great impression - things that he certainly does not have to do (backstage receptions, getting off the bus to mingle, accepting flowers and cards on stage, eating a Georgia peach on stage, etc.). And, just doing some quick math on these solo shows at small venues - he's not making a killing to say the least. He wants to be there, not necessarily for the money - but for his people.

CONCERT REVIEW: June 19 at Biloxi Grand Theatre in Biloxi, MS

Hi Russ,

A few words about the Biloxi show on June 19th. Great website, by the way - I discovered it while searching for tickets to the show - googled Jackson and found your site.

First, thanks to MTRAIN for posting the setlist. This was my second time seeing Jackson live, the first being a couple of years ago in my hometown of New Orleans. I thought the Biloxi show far better, due in large part to the fact that I managed to get front row seats, stage right. Jackson was sitting directly in front of me about 25 feet back from the edge of the stage, on which I was able to set my beer and enjoy. What a treat.

He had some things to say about playing requests from the audience, which were numerous and at times a bit too frantic. He had to calm it down a bit after the first couple of songs, saying at one point, "See, the thing is, I actually get to play what I want!" He said this in an obviously joking manner and clearly wasn't bothered much by the requests. I was actually kind of glad he said something because it did tone the requests down to a manageable level. In spite of his gentle scolding, he continued to take requests and play them immediately and the show had a feel like he was pretty much playing whatever the folks in the audience wanted. For me, being up so close, it was like being in a small bar. I called out at one point (maybe 12 songs into the show) "Play anything from Late For The Sky, Jackson!" and he said, "What, I haven't played anything from Late For The Sky Yet?" and immediately moved to the piano and played For A Dancer. He played a song about Biloxi (he put the written lyrics on the piano "just in case") and also Redneck Friend ("I can't get out of Mississippi without playing this one!") I had a wonderful time. What made it even more special was that Jackson was kind enough to sign 2 autographs during the show and I was lucky enough to get one of them. I'll tell the story below, since according to JB himself, he "never does that" and it was really pretty cool the way it all transpired. I'd be curious to know from folks who have seen him numerous times if he ever signs autographs during a show?

Just in case Jackson reads this, I want to first thank him for signing for me. It means more than I can say to have his autograph, especially on my favorite album. My wife thought I was a little crazy for bringing my Late For The Sky CD and I figured she was right. I knew I had front row seats, though, and thought I'd bring something for him to sign just in case the stars aligned and I was able to somehow get close enough to get an autograph. Well, align they did. About a third of the way into the show, a woman in the third row behind me got up after one song with a really nice glass vase of flowers and set them on the stage right near me. Jackson got up and walked downstage to the edge, now only about 4 feet from me, and accepted them, telling the woman how beautiful they were, how sweet a gesture it was, etc. Before he walked back to his chair with the flowers, I handed him the insert from my Late For The Sky CD (which I had brought) with a sharpie attached, gulped and said, "Jackson, as long as you're down here, could I please have your autograph?" He was 20 feet away from his microphone at this point and I doubt too many people in the theatre knew what was going on. I had actually planned on sliding the liner notes the 20 feet or so across the stage after his encore, hoping he'd pick it up and sign it at the end of the show, expecting to probably lose it and have to buy another. But, when he was so close right there, I decided to "go for it" right in the middle of the show. He hesitated for a minute with the vase of flowers in his other hand, then reached out and took the CD insert and said, "OK, but you'll have to get it later". I wasn't sure what that meant but I was pretty pumped. He put the flowers and my CD liner notes on the little table next to his chair and went on with the show.

More than an hour later, after his second encore (Late For The Sky) he came downstage a bit, waving and thanking the crowd, but was clearly not going to get close enough to the crowd to sign anything or shake any hands. I said to my wife, "He's not going to sign it". I was sure he'd (very understandably) forgotten my CD liner on the table and was about to walk offstage when someone else slid a CD across the stage to his feet, hoping for an autograph! He stooped down, picked it up, looked a little bewildered, and went back to his chair. He sat down and signed her CD for her. Just as I was sure he would forget mine, he picked it up off his table and said into the microphone, "You know I NEVER do this... I'm always afraid it'll turn into some crazy autograph signing frenzy" to which someone in the crowd replied, "So what?!" He chuckled and scralwed his name huge across the sky above the house on my CD cover. Then he played Mystery Companion, said his final goodbyes and walked off for good. He apparently said something to a roadie, because one came out immediately and walked the two signed CD covers downstage and delivered them to us.

Thanks again, Jackson, for doing something wonderful and making my year. And thanks to you, Russ, for maintaining such a nice fan site.

CONCERT REVIEW: June 22 at Music City Texas Theatre in Linden, TX

Hi Russ,

I just wanted to thank you for this outstanding website!! My friend and I live in Richmond Texas, and we learned about Tuesday's concert in Linden Texas from you. It was actually listed here before it was confirmed on the website for the Music City Texas Theater. We were able to get seats in the second row, well before it had been run in the Dallas papers, at which point it sold out immediately.

When we arrived at the concert hall Monday evening, we were amazed at the size! It is very small, only about 475 seats, and run by a board of musicians who have played music all thier lives, with the likes of Don Henley, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and many others. It is a non-profit organization, whose goals are to promote music, and tourism in the area. Don Henley is actually from Linden, and a few years ago, when the local hospital was about to close, he did a benefit to keep it alive. The Music City Texas Theater has been open for a little over a year. They have had about 10 concerts, I'm sure all of them fabulous!

Jackson did this concert totally as a benefit for these guys that are his friends from the early 70's, and because he has such a good heart. It was amazing! They were all so friendly, and treated us as one of their own. As the hall opened the night of the show, about 6:00, they had Texas Barbecue for sale. It is a dry county, but you could bring your own alcohol in. As people arrived, there were 'greeters' at the door. They were such sweet ladies hugging just about everyone who came in!

As the lights went down, and Jackson came out on stage, he seemed completely at ease in this hometown atmosphere. He opened with the Barricades of Heaven, and it was so appropriate, surrounded by all these friends from his youth. He went into My Beginnings (?) the song about his grandfather's house, and he was very conversational with the audience, then and all throughout the show. He has a great sense of humor, and timing, and the audience just absorbed every drop. During the night, while he was taking requests, he alluded to the fact that some of his songs are a little dark, wrist slashers, he called them, so he had to intersperse with his upbeat songs, and try to leave everyone on a high note. He definitely achieved that, and more. When it was all over, we couldn't bring ourselves to leave, and had to just sit for about an hour and a half.

There will be pictures and I'm sure the Playlist will be posted on The Music City Texas Theater website: www.musiccitytexas.org. It was a magical evening in a fabulous setting, and I know there will be other amazing shows to come!! Hopefully also by Jackson, again.

Sincerely,

Hi--I was able to purchase a copy of the recent CBS interview from Video Watch for about 40.00. Their number is (415) 897-3983. Don't know if still selling them given your note about copyright.

Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the April VH-1 classics JB interviews? Or other recent or semi-recent appearances? (other than e-bay).

Also, is that fan magazine Late for the Sky still around?

CONCERT REVIEW: June 22 at Music City Texas Theatre in Linden, TX

CONCERT 6/2/04 -- Concert Notes from a FAN! lol

I actually was contacted by a list member to write something about the Linden Concert (Jackson Browne Yahoo Fan Group). How many times & ways can I say wonderful??? lol It was a great night. We (my 17 yr old daughter & I) traveled 7 hours to Linden. I have, as all of you, loved Jackson's music & lyrics for 30 + years. I contacted the venue the day after the first article ran in the Dallas Morning News. We were able to get 2nd row / 2 seats off center seats. HEAVEN! We first thought we were going to be able to take pictures freely, then the message was changed to no flash during concert. I HAD to take a few, so sorry...to his management, but I did snap just a few. I could not be void of any evidence of this amazing event. He was gorgeous (beard...I am not a fan), very kind, talkative, & friendly.

He spoke of his friend Richard Bowden, who sponsored this benefit concert. He spoke of Bowden & Henley and the early days in CA, 1970ish, what they could remember of the events (in jest). There were lots of people there who were local area people, invited guests (Dallas Morning News contributor sit right behind us - he brought his 20ish son and friend). There were avid Jackson Browne fans there as well. Whitney & I were able to request many songs and he played them all! I don't have the play list, but am expecting to get it soon from a list member. He could hear us well as we were in the second row (of which he mentioned to us later).

One song I requested was "Daddy's Tune", he could not remember it well, I must say I know every word and I couldn't bring the words to mind either --- to truly excited! The guy next to me, from Dallas, knew every word. Jackson was of course darling while trying to remember the song and speaking of writing it about his father. He introduced "Looking East" by saying that it was curious (I believe was his word or at least implied meaning) that this was the song that was playing when he was in the parade - Grand Marshall - in Linden in 2001. He would never forget that it was the song that the twirlers, twirled to! He was smiling all during this story! My take was - the awe of / grappling with ... the entirety of this small town.

He then (paraphrasing) said that this song was.... (He seemed careful)...that the two coast of the US seemed more liberal or on the edge and that the middle of the states, well....(very careful - me paraphrasing again) was more.....well...he then said, I would not presume to know your political views, but I am very liberal, this song is about being on the edge(paraphrasing and sort of an inference to ... and all that applies). I wanted to shout aloud -- two LIBERALS from OKLAHOMA HERE -- but I contained myself. It seemed at first that he thought the audience was locals only, then as the concert went on, and such varied requests, he commented that there were those who knew all his work (remember this is all paraphrasing...as I am old and haven't been that excited in many many years)and some who probably only knew a few songs! I now do remember requesting, I am a Patriot, right after Looking East, but he did not sing that one....memory spurts here - lol.

Maybe saying you are a liberal only once in a very small community in a southern state is a brilliant self preserving technique! lol - little liberal humor / just my opinion. At one point, he played Doctor My Eyes, you could tell the barely fans...they were now moving in the rhythm of the evening. I will now list the songs I know he played: Doctor My Eyes, Rock Me on the Water, Take It Easy (with Eagles chat), These Days (the versions & the Nikko story), Redneck Friend (a man's voice from the back of the room requested this, he smiled & laughed and said ok sure a Redneck song for a Redneck (he said someone's name but I didn't catch it), ok that was funny!, For Everyman, For a Dancer a ...lady...on the front row said what did they request??? I whispered it to her ....no familiar look, these people - on the front row! lol lol,

Your Bright Baby Blues, The Pretender, Running on Empty, Somebody's Baby, In the Shape of the Heart, Looking East, The Naked Ride Home, Rosie (with full story about his Mom thought the song was about Roseš wine), Late for the Sky, & toward the end of the entire concert, Whitney & I remained standing a few seconds after the crowd sat, and said "Sky Blue and Black", he looked at us & said what?, We said Sky Blue and Black, he smiled and closed with it....it was so beautiful. I felt it was the real stand out song of the evening, although I thought Late for the Sky, For a Dancer, In the Shape of a Heart, Somebody's Baby, and The Naked Ride home were the other stand outs. They all sounded just a bit extra special that evening & acoustically. He was brilliant.

After the show, a few folks had permission from sponsors to remain (I am guessing as we did) to met him and get autographs and pics. Whitney and I waited very shortly in a line to chat with him. I took a few pics of him during this time (I will upload in an album - I did put one pic of Jackson, Whitney, & I on - this evening. He was very kind, soft spoken with the people...each / then our turn ... my head was a complete whirl (I am soooo not joking)the kind intro person said...Jackson, this is Jan & Whitney, mother and daughter, he looked at us and said...I can tell, you two were sitting in the second or third row weren't you. I said yes. The person said, they have driven a long way here, - yes I said, yes 7 hours, 2 LIBERALS from OKLAHOMA! He smiled (sort of perked up) and said (and I wished I could remember this verbatim...but I can't --again, could I say that I am a calm, self confident, articulate, professional woman, who babbled like a goofy teenager! - I was shocked at myself! lol lol).

He said something to the effect of liberals and Norman...I replied that I am at the University, yes there are liberals there, he asked me something else about that, and I did not fully hear and was so excited I just said....Jackson, when my children were old enough to begin to truly listen to music, I used to say to them ...listen to this, it is Jackson Browne, it is "smart people's music". He leaned forward and said what....and I said "smart people's music", he said I like that, thank you. I told him that Whitney could sing this lyrics by 7 years old, he looked at her and smiled so kindly (he had our copy of The Best of Jackson Browne - and signed it, without asking again what are your names, {a heart symbol} Jan and Whitney, Jackson Browne.

Then I don't know what was said next, but in a minute I was going to take Whitney's picture with him, and the concert person said, get up there I will take your picture with them. I jumped in, and the picture (only 1) you will see on the Photos of this list. He had his arm around me, are you with me ladies?????, Jackson had his arm around my waist , and I around his waist - oh...my....god...lol, those were my exact thoughts lol! He had his arm around Whitney's shoulders, such a kind, gracious, appropriate man (ok she is gorgeous - her size 1 outfit was to die for - I will put a picture of her alone in front of the stage later)and I then...with NO Warning to myself / while feeling his arm around me and mine around him - and that flashing in my mind again, I just blurted out, OH MY GOD A 30 YEAR DREAM, I swear -- I had NO WARNING that it was coming out!!!

He laughed a bit and smile and the picture was taken!!!!!!!!!!! What an IDIOT, I was, I promise, I haven't felt like that since I was 13!!!! The concert handler guy said ok, we have to keep moving Jackson has to drive to LA(state not city) tonight, as I was gathering my camera case from a bench, I heard a small voice say "Jackson, could I get a hug"?....I turned to look and he said "Sure Whitney". OH MY GOD.........it struck me a bit funny and unexpected that she asked, he was very gracious, she was darling. And we left the building!!! My feet hit the sidewalk about 100 yards from the exit..........In all the years that I have loved his music, and have thought I would love to say this about that.........never did I think I would say ONE THING THAT I SAID?????????? Oh well, he has met other excited women before lol lol ..........hope I didn't ruin the chances of OKLAHOMA getting him on his next US Tour (should have mentioned that)!

He was last in OK City in 1994 - sold out, we must figure out a request list of cities for him for next spring, and get someone to get the list of requests to him. I wonder if he thinks the more politically conservative states, won't fill the concert seats? SO, wrong - liberals everywhere - Jackson Browne fans truly everywhere with varying political opinions, as I read in this room. I thank the private mail request for this entry, it has been fun writing, a book - no less. Signed one of the many Jan's on this list, the one who usually never writes, the liberal from Oklahoma,
