This concert was a surprise celebration for my best friend in Ohio who lost his job nearly 2 years ago and decided to go back to school to get his master's degree in elementary education. He received it in early May. We saw our first JB show together in September of 1980 during the "Hold Out" tour. We were high school seniors at the time. He thought he was merely coming to Florida to enjoy a week in the sun and relax before continuing his job search. I was able to keep the show a secret from him until I was forced to give him his ticket at the door. We had to laugh. Pulling into the show he was oblivious to the marquee. In the parking lot, the crowd was quite "mature" looking and not a soul was wearing a Jackson T-shirt. needless to say, when he finally took a look at his ticket, we were both overcome with emotion.

The show started similarly to the handful of solo acoustic shows I've attended. Jackson walking out with no fanfare, bowing appreciatively, pulling out one of his dozen and a half guitars and strumming the opening chords to "Barricades of Heaven." Set one breezed by quickly, highlighted by a set closing, For a Dancer.

The second set was magical. After a beautiful rendition of "For Everyman," a fan called out for "Running on Empty." Jackson said as soon as someone call it out he has to play it immediately. A few songs later, someone requested "That Girl Could Sing", a personal favorite of mine. He got through the first verse just fine, but when it came to verse two, he was dumbfounded. His face was priceless. I yelled out, "running into the midnight," but I guess he could not here me. He rolled his left hand around and snapped his fingers as if the words would come to him magically through the air. They never did. He proceeded with the third verse and later again attempted to do the second verse. He got a bit of it, but it never materialized. I've seen him have a brain freeze on stage several times over the years. Each time I felt it brought him closer to his true fans, showing a bit of vulnerability. He is so good natured about it, you can't help but love it. Prior to singing a twangy, country style "Here Come Those Tears Again" he told a story about how he wrote the song with his former mother in law. He said he visited her recently. She is now 93 years old. He continued to explain how they originally meant it to be a county song. The rendition was something I had never heard and could easily envision a country singer reprising it. I finally had the privilege to hear "I am A Patriot" before a set closing "Take it Easy" and an encore of another personal favorite, "Before the Deluge." It was the first time I had heard it since the aforementioned 1980 show.

As I mentioned earlier, the crowd was quite "mature." Not only in age, but in the way we respected Jackson on stage. The shout out requests took place only between songs. We were quiet and mindful while he was performing them. I had read a few reviews mentioning how the crowds were getting a bit out of hand during a few performances. Fortunately, I had never been to a show where that was the case. Apparently a woman a few rows behind me was singing along. I heard another woman gently request she refrain from doing so as it was interfering with her listening to Jackson. The "singer" apologized profusely saying it just felt so natural but realized it was actually pretty rude. That is about as violent as it got.

Needless to say, my friend and I spent two and a half hours alternately feeling youthful and aged. There has been nothing quite like spectacular music that has endured and expanded to bridge that gap.

CONCERT REVIEW: March 2, 2011 at Sacramento Community Center in Sacramento, CA

Hey, i saw him in sacramento in march. Accoustics sucked and jackson played moody music.

Seeing in arcata ca in nov. Bringing the same date i want to hear what i hear, not alot of us.

Would he consider singing the fuse and before the deludge? I find those songs of jacksons inner self, more personal to him. Know they were not big hits but us fans like all his stuff. Regardless i am so looking forward to seeing him again at HSU.
