JACKSON BROWNE
Fan Letters & Reviews

December 2006

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

I am trying to find out if some really old songbooks of Jackson's ever existed; I don't think they do. Does anyone have a songbook from any of Jackson's first three albums: Jackson Browne, For Everyman, or Late For The Sky?

Please note that I am NOT looking for songbooks collections of Jackson's music. Every album since The Pretender has been released as an individual songbook. I'm looking for definitive evidence that any of the first three albums have a matching songbook, like every album since.

Thanks for your help.

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS: James Taylor tribute

I wanted to add my comments reagarding this show and an October posting... When Jackson, Crosby, and Sheryl Crow did the song "Mexico", Sheryl Crow's voice was louder than Crosby's and Jackson's but I believe it was meant to be this way. She was meant to be the lead singer with them as her backups. You could here Crosby's voice during the chorus part and occasionally Jackson's, but I think his part was just meant to complete the sound. A lot of things you read about Crosby, Stills, and Nash will say sometimes when they sing harmony that Crosby's voice is harder to pick out because that is how it is supposed to be, it is that way to fill out and complete the chord. I think they looked like they had a great time and the face that Jackson made that is referenced in the October letter is one I have seen him do in previous interviews, most specifically in an interview with Arsenio Hall and Kirstie Alley. She made a reference to him being cute, and he had a big boyish grin and raised his eyebrows. I think he was walking off stage and was looking at James Taylor with great affection and was very happy to be there. Anyway, that is my take on a great show. Keep up the great work... Thanks.

CONCERT REVIEW: December 4, 2006 at The Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA

Review of December 4 concert in Santa Barbara
Jackson Browne and David Lindley with Kiko Veneno

Wow was this a great concert. I didn't know what to expect regarding Kiko Veneno, but when he got on stage with his ensemble - 3 guitarists and a percussionist - he knocked the socks off the audience. He is an accomplished flamenco/fusion guitarist who also sings fado. Of course it makes sense that Jackson would want to give his fan base an opportunity to hear this wonderful performance, and, gracious, generous guy that he is, give Kiko Veneno more exposure in the U.S.

Now about Jackson and David's performance. It was split with a little more than half the music being Jackson's well-loved standards and the rest new material (for me anyway). David Lindley was supposed to sing with Jackson, but didn't because he had a very bad cold. He did sing one or two with Jackson though, and his performance on all his varied stringed instruments was just outstanding. I am now interested in getting some of Lindley's music. One song they did together, from one of David's CDs was fantastic, also a ballad I had not heard before. Then for the last part of the show Kiko Veneno came out and Jackson, David and Kiko and his band performed together. They did a Spanish version of "Take it Easy" called "Tranquillo" which was very clever and funny as well as other numbers which really rocked the whole audience. Jackson also sang Leonard Cohen's song, "A Thousand Kisses Deep" - again totally entrancing.

The material I had not heard before was so exciting - of course I love to hear Jackson sing the old tunes, but I think he is a little tired of it, as is understandable, and he really lit up during the other stuff and so did the audience. Songs that he does not usually sing from his previous cd's were also exciting - especially the version of "The Next Voice You Hear." It would be great to hear him do a whole program of just whatever he wanted instead of feeling compelled to repeat the standard repertoire because he's being so conscientious to try to please the whole audience. A difficult tightrope to walk, especially when some of the audience (though a smaller percentage than at other concerts) continue to call out song requests. Jackson, your fans are ready for anything - try us!

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

I was looking for a video that aired on PBS probably in the late 70's or early 80's with Jackson Browne.
Do you know of anywhere I might could get one?
One of the songs was "before the deluge" or "after the deluge"
You can either email or post letter!
thank you,

Webmaster's Reply:

Hi John,

All of the television appearances that I am aware of are posted on the website in the FAQ, Section 4.5.1 "CONCERT VIDEOS". The one that most likely fits the description is probably #9 (In Concert, Montreux 1982: Your Bright Baby Blues (part)/Tender is The Night/For A Dancer/The Crow On The Cradle/Before The Deluge/Boulevard/Doctor My Eyes/Running On Empty/Sleep's Dark And Silent Gate/The Pretender/Hold On Hold Out/The Load Out/Stay/The Road And The Sky/Late For The Sky - 86 minutes), but I don't know for sure that this was PBS.

In any case, I've never seen this released commercially and don't know anyone that has a copy. I'll post your letter to the website and maybe someone who does have a copy will contact you. The problem is that video recorders weren't all the common in the late 1970s and early '80s, so not many people would have been able to record it.

Good luck,

Russ

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Hi Russ and John,

I suspect that the concert appearance you are asking about is the 1976 "Soundstage" appearance. It is a wonderful show and has been recorded and distributed among fans. Jackson appears with David Lindley and Bernie Leadon among others. I'm afraid I don't have the ability to copy videos or DVDs, but you could try asking on the Yahoo list, or one of the trading lists, whether anyone could help you find it. I don't believe it's commercially available. True fans never sell these things, but sometimes they do trade or share.

Thanks, Russ, for maintaining your site, and being such a great central repository for all information related to Jackson.

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

I am new to this site. I did not even know it was here until doing the google thing...

I saw Jackson Browne a few years ago in Charleston, SC....a little stop on the way for him I am sure. It was a great show...I was the one, about three rows back, that kept asking for "Rock me on the Water", which, by the end of the show, more than my row was asking for...just to shut me up I think. He played it though...and that was worth it all.

I just wanted to say hi, and sure would love to know if he will be in the area anytime soon....or ever again.

Happy Holidays to you all, what a great sight for a great man of words.

Hi Russ!

Just a few words to wish you and your beloved relatives a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I would like to extend this wishes , also to Jackson Browne and his fans!

Please keep this site well and alive!

I am still asking myself, what shall I do to bring JB to Portugal, to see him perform here, before he retires from live appearances!

All the best for you!

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

Writing this email to convey how much JB has brought such pleasure in his music. My husband and met over 40 years ago whilst he was a music journalist for a leading british music paper. He travelled a lot on tour and wrote many biographys for record albums for up famous stars. But to him Jackson Browne meant alot musically and he first introduced him to me with Late for the sky when we first married. I was instantly hooked, and now after all these years have all the original albums and CDs, not to be sold ever! My husband sadly died this year of cancer aged 58. We always said we would have Late for the Sky at our funerals. I played this music for Billy as it meant alot to both of us. We have been to JB concerts here in the UK many times and both found them magical. I now listen to his music alone but not in spirit as my husband will always be with me.

CONCERT REVIEW: December 4, 2006 at The Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA

I flew into Santa Barbara from Utah to see this concert. I actually bought the whole group of concert tickets so I could be assured of having a ticket to the Lobero. I donated the others back. It was so great, I'm still flying. Having been a fan since the days at the "Armadillo World Headquarters," in Austin ,Texas, it was like seeing a bunch of old hippies gathering to see an old friend. Jackson, thank you, thank you, thank you, for all your contributions to the music world and for lyrics that bring tears to my eyes. What a wonderful venue for me to see this duo, Jackson and David. I missed David's voice, but they wowed me any way. Thanks for introducing us to a new group of outstanding musicians in Kiko Veneno and his guys. It was easy to tell they could feel the love from the audience.

I believe the person who wrote in looking for a video of "Before the Deluge" should get the DVD, "Going Home." It rocked my world. What a masterfully done concert done in 1994. It is loaded with lots of information and orchestrated music. "After the Deluge" is the last song on the DVD. Something on a personal note regarding that song. I was sitting w/my father, after 5 days, 24/7, in a hospital in Oct. as he was dying and I was watching "Coming Home". As "After the Deluge" began playing, I looked up to see my father passing away, on his 80th birthday. I thought it rather ironic that he would take his last breathe while I listened to those particularly beautiful lyrics. It comforted me. Thanks for this opportunity to let people know what they missed. I'm actually trying to get a trip planned to the gig that Jackson and Willie Nelson are putting on in Feb. See you there!!

GENERAL FAN COMMENTS:

As 2006 draws to a close, I would like to thank Russ (and Julie) for the fabulous web site and all the people who contributed to it this year. I have enjoyed reading all the letters from Australia and Spain and Scotland and England as well as the ones from people who went to the concerts in the United States. From January, when we went to see Jackson and others at the Fillmore in San Francisco, to December, to the Lobero and the Temple Bar, there have been a variety of experiences that are like a charm bracelet of the year. I wish you all a happy and healthy and music filled 2007.

I got a birthday card today from a lovely woman in Colorado who I "met" via this site. She came out to the Ventura Hillsides show and will be returning in February. The front says "What a long strange trip it's been" and the inside is "Happy Birthday to a fellow traveler." Happy New Year to all of you fellow travelers who are fans of Jackson Browne and have formed a lovely community of kindred spirts. On to 2007!
