Fan Letters & Reviews August 2009 CONCERT REVIEW: July 30 at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, IL Just saw JB last night 7/30 at Ravinia outside of Chicago. Totally awesome show. The crowd loved him. He looks great... shaved the beard. Sounded amazing. He sang some new stuff which I enjoyed, but mostly stuck with his classics including Take it Easy and ended with The Loadout/Stay. If you have the opportunity to see him this summer... GO! His voice is still as strong as ever and his backup singers and band were fantastic. The music was terrific! The audience didn't loosen up and really attend until they got a rock vibe during the second set. Well, not all the more recent material IS rock. Wish there weren't so many nostalgists. But the band went with it, and ended rousingly. I was far to one side, but up front. I found the spoken-work amplification muddy, echoey, unintelligible much of the time, and so I'm also wondering if I heard the music as it's meant to be heard. If course, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to see him twice in Ontario - Orillia then in Ottawa. The two shows were completely different. I must say that while JB did a grest job in Orillia, the energy of the crowd and the terrible venue certainly affected the evening. Then I headed to the Bluesfest in Ottawa. With a 20,000 plus appreciative crowd on a beautiful summer evening, that night was spectacular!!! You could definitely see the energy level of the band change and Jackson, at one point, said how good he felt!! It was sooo sweet. I am now off to see him for the third time this summer in Charlottesville Virginia. Another outdoor pavillion should be great!! I first saw JB in Buffalo at the age of 18 when he released Hold Out. I have seen him twice since then and now I have three events in one summer. Not bad for a Canadian!!! Submitted by: lsadlowski@gmail.com CONCERT REVIEW: August 2 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ Russ, I remember an interview Jackson Browne gave in the mid-eighties, right around the time of the World in Motion and Lives in the Balance albums, where Jackson wondered out loud that he wasn't sure what his audiences wanted when seeing him live. Steeped in the political happenings at the time and desparately wanting to convey his thoughts and views from everything to Reaganomics to Iran-Contra in his politically charged songs, Jackson, even twenty-plus years ago, grappled with finding the right mix of "oldies" and the more topical stuff. To me, he found that mix 10 years ago when he started his solo accoustic tours. He seemed to clearly enjoy playing songs that he hadn't sang in a while and challanged himself with solo arrangements for some of his newer material. But until this tour started way back in September - he has had few opportunities to explore that format with his band. He opened for Tom Petty when The Naked Ride Home was released and was limited to an hour of stage time. He toured with Steve Earle and Keb Mo, with his time on stage sliced in thirds. You have to go all the way back to the I'm Alive tour in '93/'94 when Jackson truly was the headliner with his band, and that group hadn't been playing together for long and weren't as comfortable playing some of the older, more classic tunes. He played the Tower Theater in Philly back in September - 3 days before the new album was even out - and played 8 of the 10 songs from the new disk. That night, he fell back on the ususal "oldies" from recent tours - ROE, Pretender, Fountain, Boulevard. Just when I thought that Jackson was still struggling to give us the right mix, along came Something Fine, with an excellent assist from new female vocalists, Chavonne Morris and Alethea Mills. It was an awesome arrangement, dramatic lighting and all. I remember thinking - that's it! - that's what I want. Let this group of talented musicians have at it with some of the old classics but give me plenty of the new stuff too, cause its all good. With all that mumbo-jumbo, analytical crap being said - Jackson Browne absloutley rocked last night in Camden/Philadelphia! As others have mentioned, Jackson finally seems to have found the perfect mix of tunes that span his career and, from all the smiles last night, seems to be having a blast doing it. In short - he is giving the fans what they want. I was a little nervous at the outset because Steve Earle was the opening act. He did a solo accoustic set that lasted over an hour. No offense to Steve Earle, whose appearance was a wonderful compliment to the music of Jackson Browne, but I was there to see Jackson do a two hour-plus gig with the band. Jackson didn't take the stage until 9:15, but when he did the place erupted! I knew we were in for a helluva night when the band kick-started the evening with I'm Alive. One big change for me last night was watching the two big video screens posted on either side of the stage. After seeing JB in more intimate settings for years, it was great to get some great close-up shots of the band and Jackson having fun and playing off each other. In fact, the stage lighting helped to create the right mood all night. Heck, Jackson even had the fog machine cranked up for certain songs. Headliner treatment all the way! Barricades followed and then soon after - the first surprise of the night - I'll Do Anything. It was probably the least likely song I would have thought to hear last night (sorry, Russ, but I had to stay away from your web site for about a month so as not to spoil any surprises), but it was excellent. At some point, Jackson called an audible, sat back down at the keyboard, and launched into Rock Me On the Water - an outstanding rendition with Chevonne and Alethea adding their special touch. Are they the "sisters of the sun"? Just wondering... Another classic that got the full band treatment - Sky Blue and Black. Beautiful as ever. Doctor/My Imagination soared and at that point, we had lift off! Jackson mentioned that his son was in the crowd (he didn't mention which one) and had requested a song - the always topical Lives in the Balance. I love it when the band breaks into their non-electric version of this song. The new songs, down from 8 songs in September to 3 last night, were perfect - Time, Cuba and Just Say Yeah. And then it happened. As Kenny from NY posted earlier, and what he called the 70's "quadrumvirate of profundity" (I don't even know what that means but it sounds good to me) THE LATE SHOW, For a Dancer, The Pretender and Running on Empty. The Late Show, holy crap! (Not as eloquent as Kenny, I know). When the first notes were hit on Jackson's keyboard, I leaped from my chair and started to hit my friend, Owen, who apparently didn't understand the historical significance of the moment. I was fortune enough to hear it live for the first time (solo) last year in Reading and nearly fell out of my first row seat in the balconey when I attempted a similar leap. With Chavonne and Alethea doing their thing - providing the female vocals that the song desparatley needs - and then the simulated car slams at the end, what can I tell you - it was the obvious highlight of the night for me. A close second was the next song - For A Dancer. I beat up on Owen again as I realized that I have never seen Jackson do this live with the band. Mark Goldenberg's haunting slide guitar work had the crowd eerily mesmorized, right up until Jackson implored us by singing the optimistic verse - "Go out and make a joyful sound". At that point, the mood in the hall was lifted as Jackson's greatest song reached it's cresendo. Spirits remained high and people stayed on their feet for The Pretender and Running On Empty. After leaving the stage for a bit, Jackson came back out, was joined by Steve Earle, as they sang I Ain't Ever Satisfied together, which led naturally into a super version of I Am a Patriot. After hearing this one for so long as a JB solo tune, it was great to hear the full band version. Since it was getting late, and it was well past 11 o'clock, I thought that was it for the night. But Jackson came back out, sat down at the keyboard, and with the lone spot light cutting through the darkened air on stage, kicked into the Load Out. As the lights came up, the band joined in and pretty soon, Jackson was directing all the guys in the crowd to sing the falsetto part in Stay. Playing this popular ode to the fans anthem to finish the show drove home the point that Jackson was there last night to give the fans what they want. He exited the stage at 11:20 to the sounds of a David Lindley tune playing over the sound sytstem. Watching Jackson joyfully play to the crowd last night, I thought of the recent concert tours from Bruce Springsteen. After reuniting with the band in '99, Bruce's concerts have been a masterful blend of old and new songs with the occasional "wow, I didn't know he was still playing that tune" song thrown in for good measure. And although Bruce has followed Jackson's lead over the years in concert (from going solo/accoustic on the Devils and Dust Tour in 2005 to the more recent audience request part of his shows) it was good to see Jackson tear a page out of the Boss' playbook on this tour. Yo Jackson, it's OK to show off every once in a while. You have the band and you certainly have the music. Let us celebrate! Submitted by: rlipovsky@sympatico.ca CONCERT REVIEWS: August 2 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ Russ - please post anonymously - thanks. I have been attending Jackson Browne shows since 1977. I have enjoyed all of them - with a band or acoustic. Just when you think you might have seen enough - Jackson and his Band (incl. Alethea and Chavonne) put on a show like they did in Camden the other night - wow! I attended a show in the beginning of this "Time the Conqueror" tour at the United Palace Theatre in New York City this past Sept. 20, 2009. I loved hearing the new songs and some great classics. The two "new" singers were a real treat and I thought they enhanced the sound of the old songs and certainly add to the sound of the new ones. Jackson and Band were simply phenominal this past Sunday. They are clearly a polished final product after almost a year of touring together and it is probably the best Jackson Browne sound I have heard in all my years of listening. I can't tell you how much my wife and I enjoyed JB & this band perform so many songs in his catalog dating back to the beginning ("Rock Me on The Water!"). This was a great "summer" show where everyone was in fine spirits - and the song selection varied from three songs off the new record, to three from "Late for The Sky" (incl. my first concert hearing of 'The Late Show'), to various songs from most all of his albums. Without getting into detail about the specific songs he played - we thoroughlly enjoyed this show from beginning to end. We took a ferry across the river to Philadelphia after the show with fellow concert attendees and it was buzzing about how Jackson just seems to get better with age. I have to say that this show reinforces - at least to this fan - that here is nothing quite like attending a Jackson Browne concert on a nice summer evening in New Jersey ...... STILL! Submitted by: Anonymous CONCERT REVIEWS: August 1 at Constellation Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY Dear Russ, As I've been lucky enough to watch two Jackson Browne concerts this spring, I'm quite interested in the reviews published on your site. It must really be some kind of work, but you do an absolutely terrific job - thank you so much! At times I come across other reviews. Usually I try to refrain from commenting on other people's reviews - for different reasons. But today I just can't help to take a closer look at the one that I've just read this morning: www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/music/blog/2009/08/CONCERT-REVIEW-Jackson-Browne-and-Steve-Earle-at-CMAC/ Thanks to a Jackson Browne interview I got introduced to Steve Earle and his music a few years ago. After listening to his album "The Revolution Starts Now" I instantly tried to catch up on him by getting most of his previous works. As Steve regularly comes around we have had the chance to watch some of his amazing concerts at Stuttgart, and I'm really looking forward to attending the next one in November. I quite understand the reviewer's reaction on people ignoring Steave Earle's set. But I don't see why they should necessarily be Jackson Browne fans. If so I must have been rather fortunate that I have never met such fans. Of course, I have seen people taking the chance to go to any kind of show - just trying to party. But I have always wondered what these people seek in a Jackson Browne and/or Steve Earle gig. Have they ever been listening to one of their songs? Probably they just heard them being played somewhere. I somehow remember having heard the Jackson 5's version of "Doctor my eyes" or the Eagles playing "Take it Easy" when I was in my early teens back in the seventies. I didn't relate these songs to their creator until much later. I have never been to a Jackson 5/Michael Jackson show and my very first Eagles' show has been this June at Munich - probably in the wake of my two previous Jackson Browne concerts this year. I almost left their admittedly perfect show after half an hour. Why? We were having seats in the very last row of the pit. And while they were playing songs like "Witchy woman" or "Peaceful Easy Feeling" the ushers - quite rudely! - told me and any other person trying to stand or dance to keep seated as the Eagles wanted to have a "seated concert" until they were going to give permission for getting up towards the end of the show. The ushers even stormed the stands - quite effortlessly. By the way, people coming and going for drinks several times throughout the whole evening didn't get into any trouble. Those interruptions with complete rows getting up in front of you was totally annoying. So being regulated in such an absolutistic and questionable way really made me think & Didn't all these guys on stage grow up in the Sixties? Isn't there anything of its nonconformist spirit left in them? But they have probably got spoilt by their success much too long - in contrast to people like Jackson Browne, Steve Earle and even Bruce Springsteen. I am very pleased that our long Southern German "waiting-for-you" (Jackson Browne) run has finally come to an end. At Stuttgart he promised to be back soon. And, of course, we do expect him to keep his promise. Kind regards, P.S.: I am utterly pleased that the "Running on Empty" issue with Mr. McCain has come to such a fantastic ending! This whole thing just hurt physically. Submitted by: Petra CONCERT REVIEWS: August 1 at Constellation Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY THE LATE SHOW...are you kidding me? WOW!Jackson and his stunning band put on a fabulous show at the C-MAC in Canandaigua, NY on Saturday. The set list was one I have seen here, so no big changes. But what a good time they all seemed to be having. Jackson was grinning pretty much the whole evening, while the "new girls" provided an incredible complement to these arrangements. Have seen him 20+ times, this being my first since Vote for Change, and it was well worth the wait. GET OUT AND SEE HIM!!! Thanks to you Russ for your dedication to keep this site alive and WELL!! Submitted by: yank7fan@verizon.net (Ron) CONCERT REVIEWS: August 2 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ Hi Russ, I just wanted to take a moment and underscore many of the points ( and feelings ) expressed within Tom's recent review of Jackson's Aug. 2 performance in Camden. Tom captured many of my personal emotions from the immediate concern that Steve Earle ( I was also disappointed by the Browne, Earle, Keb Mo triple-header a few years back ) would be stealing precious time, to the transition to a band after having been floored by the experience of the solo acoustic tour. I go back to the 70's and 2 shows at The Main Pointe ( Bryn Mawr, Pa ) when Jackson and David Lindley were doing 2 a night for the week in an effort to save the iconic coffee house. There have been many concerts since, and I never expected this night in Camden to threaten the standard established in Bryn Mawr or at Reading's acoustic show. Very happy to tell you that the show ( as Tom described ) was awesome and could be no worse than a top 3 for me. Couldn't remember ever hearing it live before so the immediate recognition of "The Late Show " generated a rush of emotions running from shock, a smile, flash backs, and a clear indication the game was on and the audience was in for a special evening. From that point on, there was no potential for disappointment from the audience regardless of their level of Jackson expertise. I had also brought along a bud. My oldest friend and a veteran of many CSNY concerts together. Despite his limited prior familiarity with other than the obvious songs (ROE, DME), he was quick to announce after the show that he was a willing convert, and looking forward to catching up on the magic of the lyrics that I had been sermonizing on for years. My apologies that this has become a longer rant that planned. Like so many of us long time fans, it's hard to keep the passion under control and a lid on the words. There have been very few constants in my 55 years, but one absolute certainty over the past 36, has been an intense connection to the man and his music. My thanks to Tom for the quality of his review. It had the obvious effect of bringing these comments out from me. Hi Russ,I wanted to share with you how terrific the concert in St Augustine was tonight. I have seen Jackson Browne many times and this was among the best concerts I have attended. I hadn't seen him with a band since the Looking East tour. All the concerts after that I have seen him alone, which I love. However the energy of having the band with him made for a fantastic concert. I had second row center seats directly in front of Jackson and got some great photos. The venue is an amphitheater, the weather was sky blue and 88 degrees and humid at the beginning of the concert. It began at 7pm, which was interesting. I don't think I have ever seen him in daylight. Jackson walked out on stage at 7:10 and began the show. They played about an hour and broke for 20 minutes or so and played until 9:50 including an encore. They played four songs from the new album Time the Conqueror, Wonderland, Going Down to Cuba, and Just Say Yeah. Now, I wish I had kept a set list. They songs covered the span of his career Jamaica, Barricades of Heaven, Too Many Angels, I'm Alive,I'd do Anything, Take It Easy, Sky Blue and Black,Lives in The Balance, The Pretender(awesome), In the Shape of A Heart, Naked Ride Home(which he said is the saddest song he knows),Running on Empty, Doctor My Eyes going in to About My Imagination, Stay, I Am A Patriot . Hopefully someone will submit a full list in order . I want to encourage everyone to go see him on this tour. Jackson looked and sounded great. Thanks for the fan site Russ. I really enjoy keeping up with JB through you. I am attaching a few photos for your viewing pleasure Submitted by: debbiejonescoop@bellsouth.net (Debbie J.) CONCERT REVIEW: August 2 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ The perfect summer night in Philly/Camden began with Steve Earle opening for Jackson. Promptly starting at 8:00, Steve played for 1 hour. I have to say I have come to know and appreciate Steve's music by way of Jackson. In fact, Steve toured with Jackson back in 2003 and I had the privilege to meet both of them at that time. Steve played to an audience that I felt was warm and receptive. One of the highlights in his performance was when his wife Allison Moorer joined him on stage for a duet of City of Immigrants. Beautiful job! Jackson took the stage promptly at 9:15 to a rousing audience. I had the privilege of 4th row seats (thanks Guacamole Fund.) I was so captured I could not believe I was seeing the man for probably the 30th or so time in my life. Jackson did come out of the gate a little slow, in fact he looked tired to me on the opener I'm Alive. But he quickly found his groove and began a powerful Barricades of Heaven which is becoming one of my favorites live as they do such a super job on this one. Jackson did follow with a few numbers sequentially on the keyboards. What a thrill to hear Fountain of Sorrow. It was one of the best renditions I have ever heard with the voice in fine shape. I thought I was going to erupt! Doctor My Eyes/ My Imagination was killer! I am sure there were those in the audience ( my husband included) who were hearing the 2 girls for the first time live. Boy, what a fine job they did, crowd was on their Feet! A real surprise and treat for me was Sky Blue and Black, The way he poured himself into this song really struck me. I can't really think of another time when I saw his entire body and and vocals so consuming on this song. I have to go back to Sept. '93 when the Philly audience first heard this song at the WXPN Five Star Night where it was very emotional. A real shocker and bonus for the evening was The Late Show. WOW- when was the last time we heard that live. Everyone was thrown for a loop. The people around me were in awe. The best part is when Jackson did the sound effect of the door slamming! As the show progressed, 3 songs were delivered from Time the Conqueror. All performed splendidly! What was really great about this show when all was said and done, Jackson pulled out all the stops and it was a real summer show mixing it up with old and new. And most importantly what the crowd wanted to hear. Lastly. when Jackson mentioned his son was there that evening, I began to seek him out figuring he would be up front. I finally spotted him on stage right. Standing alone,I could definitely make out who he was as I have seen his picture a few times on different web sites. I really enjoyed watching Ethan watch his dad. He was grinning ear to ear. The best part was when Jackson was performing the Loadout/Stay as Ethan looked so happy. I got a kick out of observing the whole thing! I'll conclude that this concert has left me on a Jackson Browne high. I truly enjoyed myself and I look forward to watching a re-rerun of Soundstage tonight at midnight. Oh, these summer nights... Submitted by: navyscporet@cox.net CONCERT REVIEW: August 7 at St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, FL I just wanted to thank Jackson for playing my very favorite song in St. Augustine, Fl. I absolutely love for a dancer! I felt as if he was singing directly to me. He really is awesome! His voice is as beautiful as ever. He is truly a talented singer, musician and song writer. I enjoyed that venue and the concert immensely. Thank You!! Hurry back ! Submitted by: cindi@bodyworksjax.com (Cindi C., Atlantic Beach, FL) CONCERT REVIEW: August 12 at Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA I had no plans for seeing the show in L.A. -- as I've got tickets for this coming Sunday in Santa Barbara -- but a very generous person (Thanks Debbie!) gave me two tickets at the last minute that she was unable to use. So I found a friend and got there in time to eat something and get to my seat... The Greek Theater in Los Angeles is a 5,700-seat outdoor amphitheater located in Griffith Park. It was built in 1929. It's always been among my favorite places to see concerts in Los Angeles. Here's the set list and some comments about the songs. As usual, Jackson switched off between guitar and keyboards. For most songs I've noted (g) for guitar and (k) for keyboards. 1. I'm Alive (g) Lots of people still not in the seats. Still pretty light outside. 2. The Barricades Of Heaven (g) featured Jeff Young on harmony vocals and keyboards and Mark Goldenberg on lead guitar. Between songs, Jackson posed for a photo for someone taking a picture somewhere near the front. But he had to wait a few seconds longer than he wanted to and made a comment about it being just like home (where I guess he sometimes has to wait for the camera). 3. I'll Do Anything with Mark's guitar taking center stage again and some harmonies by Chavonne Morris Stewart and Alethea Mills. Some drum highlights by Mauricio Lewack. By the end of this song, most people were finally seated and it looked full. The show must have been sold out as I didn't see an empty seat. By this time it was starting to get darker too, which I thought helped to focus the show better. 4. Fountain Of Sorrow (k) Jackson introduced the song as an older one that never gets tired of... followed by a standing ovation. Band introductions 5. Time The Conqueror (g) Jackson explained that the first line comes from a dream he had when he was really young, or when he dreamed he was really young on the street where he grew up. 6. Off Of Wonderland (g) Introduced by saying that it's a Laurel Canyon song, and probably more the time than the place, but it applies to today as well. He talked about how the first time he remembers going to the Greek Theater was to see Crosby Stills & Nash and Joni Mitchell, and how he waited to talk to Crosby who he knew and who had promised he'd produce Jackson's first album, but had been hard to get a hold of ever since. Great driving beat on this song. Done as a real rocker. 7. In The Shape Of A Heart (g) 8. Too Many Angels (g) featuring Mark on Spanish guitar 9. Naked Ride Home (g) Jackson introduced his guitar tech Manny Alverez to help out on this song. Many was given a guitar solo. Jackson introduced the song by saying that it's the saddest song he knows. I wonder how much of the crowd understood that. To me, the song is about the ending of a relationship, but it might not appear that way at first glance. Maybe he's introducing it that way to make people think about it and look for the deeper meaning. 10. Take It Easy (g) "A song I wrote with Glen Frey." He said that for years he didn't like performing it because it was so strongly associated with the Eagles that he thought people would just think he was covering an Eagles song. He said that he didn't sing it for years, and then corrected himself and said he'd sing it in the car along with the Eagles when he heard it on the radio just like the rest of us! But he says that he's over that now and that he really loves the song. The crowd was on its feet the whole time. Intermission. 11. Jamaica Say You WIll (k) Sounded GREAT! 12. Doctor My Eyes (k) the crowd was on its feet again... 13. My Imagination (k) Chavonne and Alethea really got the crowd going and Mark's guitar solo was blistering. One of the highlights of the night. 14. Lives In The Balance (g) Much of the crowd remained standing... and those who weren't got to their feet when Chavonne and Alethea took over. 15. Going Down To Cuba - Jackson mentioned that the band had recently been down to cuba and that people from the U.S. need a special visa to get there. He said that they had gotten some kind of "religious" visa, that it was the closest fit! 16. Just Say Yeah (g) Jackson said he wrote it for his girlfriend and someone in the front asked "which one?" to which he laughed and said, "I've only got one!" He said the song was about mixing it up and keep the relationship fresh if you want it to last a lifetime, which he does. 17. The Late Show (k) another highlight. Great to hear this one in concert. Jackson did comment that it was another song he hadn't really performed in 20 years abut he's glad to have it back in the set. So was the crowd. 18. For A Dancer (k) Still a favorite. Another highlight. Jackson talked about how L.A. people are jaded (and that being an L.A. person, he probably is too), but the crowd this night didn't seem jaded and wondered allowed if we were all bussed in from somewhere else. 19. The Pretender (k) - crowd on its feet the whole time. 20. Running On Empty (g) crowd still on its feet. First Encore: 21. I Am A Patriot 22. It's Your Thing (This cover of the Isley Brothers hit really rocked!) Second Encore: 23. The Load Out (k) 24. Stay During "The Load Out," the next show was in San Diego, all the towns all look the same "EXCEPT THIS ONE!" and "Idiocracy" on the video... were included in the lyrics. As my attendance was very last minute, I hadn't told too many people that I was attending. I ran into a few people I knew, but really didn't get around much. I did see Steve Postell at the break and had a nice talk with him. He's just finished a tour with Jennifer Warnes. And after the show I ran into Rosemary Butler on my way out and spoke with her just briefly. That's about it for now. Great show. Very fun. Lots of excitement from the crowd and I only heard very positive comments as people were exiting. The whole band did it's usual great job... Maurico Lewak and Kevin McCormick are rock steady, but seldom get highlighted... Really tired here and I'm probably forgetting something... but maybe someone else will fill in anything I've missed. I'm looking forward to Sunday. I wasn't familiar with his music then nor had met the many friends that I have met at his shows and through Russ's letters and site. I always enjoy going to the Greek as it's one of the few places that have been in Los Angeles longer than I have. It will not go into detail as Russ did his own fantastic review which I will enjoy rereading in the future to remember such a lovely night. Good music, good friends, food, wine, can't ask for much more. This was the first time I've gone to the Greek early enough to picnic and listen to the sound check and hearing the beautiful music under the trees on a summer night is amazing. We are going to see Bonnie Raitt/Taj Mahal there in September and we will go early again. The highlights for me were (my favorite song), "Barricades of Heaven" with Jeff Young on harmony and Mark on lead guitar and "I'll Do Anything," which Jackson has said is Dianna's favorite song. Alethea got married in January and her name now is Alethea Stewart. She and Chavonne Morris add so much with there vocals. Off of Wonderland was much better than on the CD. I used to live off of Wonderland, which is a street off Laurel Canyon, and always enjoy that song. Much more rocking live. They were doing "Too Many Angels" at the sound check and the version in the show was beautiful with Mark's guitar work. The only request that I heard was "Culver Moon" and Jackson seemed surprised and said, "No one ever requests that." He didn't play it but since it's an LA song, it's one of my favorites. I was given pit tickets at the last minute and hadn't planned to go to the Greek show since we are going to San Diego tonight but am so glad that I did as it was a gorgeous night and Jackson and the band were really "on". They were all that and then some. Back-up singers were fabulous! The last song before the break he played TAKE IT EASY. Also, he closed with LOAD-OUT/STAY. I really liked the way he interacts with the audience. He plays longer than most bands. Jackson and his band were a real class act for sure!! Best b-day present ever!! Take care and i hope he comes back to Atlanta soon !! I loved your recent review of JB concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles! I wish I could have been there, and have the rare opportunity to listen to "The Late Show" and "For a Dancer", two of my favourite songs, since Jackson didn't play them in Murcia (Spain) when I saw him in May. The story Jackson told when he introduced the song "Off of Wonderland", (also one of my favourites from last album), about seeing and meeting David Crosby, reminds me how important JB was for rescuing and supporting David from his various problems, later in his life. Today is David Crosby's birthday (68 years old, by the way), and if we still have our good David singing and touring, we definitely must thank, once again, to Jackson for his precious help! As "uncle" Neil used to sing, "long may you run, David and Jackson!" We were on the 405 when Tom turns and asks us "Hey do you guys mind if Jackson Browne sits in with us tonight? I still remenber that day with glorious clarity, as you showed up to soundcheck at 4 PM. Then it was over, the standing ovation went on for 20 minutes, you slapped me a high 5 and I did not see you again until August 7, 2009 at the St. Augustine Florida (Amphitheater). Wow what a great show, a GREAT band, I can only say that it was an honor to play with you, and an even more satisfying pleasure to see you continue to bless the American people with your music, your thoughts, and your conscienceness. CONCERT REVIEW: August 16 at Santa Barbara Bowl at Santa Barbara, CA Sunday night's show at the Santa Barbara Bowl was another outstanding show. The set list was identical to last week's show at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, but I'll go through it again anyway... One real treat for this show (as compared to last week), was the addition of Luis Conte on percussion for most of the night. Luis added a great deal to the sound, though generally in a subtle way. The Santa Barbara Bowl is a 4,562-seat outdoor amphitheater located in the hills above Santa Barbara, California. It was built in 1936 and is one of the more beautiful outdoor theaters I've been to. I really enjoy going there... even the hike into this rather rustic enclave. I also thought that the sound was just a touch better than that at the Greek, but that could be due to where our seats were at each location. Speaking of seats. Our seats were pretty good, but after we arrived, our friends Deb & Jeff had a couple of unused tickets in better seats down in the pit area, so we ended up sitting much closer than we had planned. Also, before the concert we met friends over at La Super Rica for Mexican food. The place was packed but we got there early so that wasn't a problem. Dinner was good. We ran into lots of friends tonight, at the restaurant, on the walk back to the venue, and inside. The concert started at 7:10. It was still pretty light outside. Jackson strolled onto the stage unannounced and received a pretty nice ovation. (You could feel the excitement.) People were still trickling in, but the seats filled up quickly. As usual, Jackson went from guitar to keyboard and back. The song list below is annotated with (g) for guitar and (k) for keyboard: 1. I'm Alive (g) - Jackson jumped straight into the song and afterwards said "It's great to be in Santa Barbara tonight." 2. The Barricades Of Heaven (g) - Introduced by saying that this is a song from southern California and than laughed and added, "well they are all from southern, California!" As the song ended there was a big scream of approval from someone in the crowd and a great round of applause. By this point, the place was pretty much full and everyone had settled into their seats. Jackson talked about the Santa Barbara Bowl and about how he has so many memories of the place both on stage and off. He introduced the next song by saying, "Here is a song that has many memories, too." 3. I'll Do Anything (k) 4. Fountain Of Sorrow (k) - He introduced this one by saying, "I could sing this song every day; it would be good for me." Mark Goldenberg's guitar solos shined. Mauricio Lewak's drumming was particularly featured on this one. Band introductions with a particular emphasis on guest Luis Conte on percussion. Luis left the stage at this point for the next three songs, but then came back on again for the rest of the show. Jackson said "It's such a trip to be back here" and "Santa Barbara is a place unto itself." He then said that his foremost memory of the bowl from the first time he played there was looking up and seeing a couple making love somewhere in the back! 5. Time The Conqueror (g) - Introduced by saying that the song came from a dream he had when he was young. Mark's slide guitar was great. 6. Off Of Wonderland (g) - Introduced by saying, "This is a song about Laurel Canyon. There is a street there called Wonderland. I lived all over Laurel Canyon." He said that when he arrived there, there were "freaks" everywhere. "It was happening." But then he later realized it was happening everywhere. He concluded by saying that the song "is about the Laurel Canyon of the mind." 7. In The Shape Of A Heart (g) - Luis Conte returned to the stage. 8. Too Many Angels (g) - Mark Goldenberg on the Spanish guitar. The song also featured backup singers Chavonne Morris Stewart and Alethea Mills and some great percussion by Luis Conte. Jackson then invited guitar tech Manny Alverez to the stage to join them on guitar for one song: 9. The Naked Ride Home (g) - Again introduced as the saddest song he knows. Chavonne and Alethea exited the stage for this one song and returned when it was over. Jeff Young's great backing vocals really added to this one. I don't think Jeff's vocals are featured enough. There is so much time featuring Chavonne and Alethea that Jeff gets less spotlight. Manny had a guitar solo here that he got some applause for. Mark had a couple of nice guitar solos. At this point, it was finally starting to get dark outside. 10. Take It Easy (g) - Introduction started with, "This is a song I wrote with Glenn Frey." Again he talked about how he didn't play it for years because it became so identified with the Eagles... although he'd sing it in his car like the rest of us. He said that when he started singing it again, he was doing his version of it, but realized that the audience was singing in the Eagles version! He concluded the song intro by saying "Finally I said F**k it, I love this song!" From the first note, the crowd was on its feet! Everyone sang along. INTERMISSION. 11. Jamaica Say You Will (k) - After the song he pulled out his earpiece and had someone come over with a replacement. He said, this one is broken too, but not as broken as the other one. As he put in the earpiece he joked about how it was a monitor so that those on stage could hear themselves and that it was not a hearing aid even though it might look like one. He joked "I"m just this side of that." Then he added "What?" 12. Doctor My Eyes (k) - Great guitar solo by Mark. The crowd was again on its feet from the first note. 13. About My Imagination (k) - The crowd remained on its feet. Chavonne and Alethea wowed the crowd and got a huge ovation. Marks' guitar solo was hot. This has become one of the true highlights of the show. 14. Live In The Balance (g) - Mark played a 12-string guitar with a Latin sound. Chavonne and Alethea were featured again. Luis Conte on percussion and Mauricio Lewak on drums were exceptionally strong on this one. Kevin McCormick played a stand up bass for this song and the next rather than his usual bass guitar. Another highlight that received a standing ovation. 15. Going Down To Cuba (g) - Jackson told the story of how they had to get a "religious" Visa to take the band down to Cuba. He stated that the US policy regarding Cuba is an outdated policy that needs to be changed. He also pointed out that Luis Conte was born in Cuba. Chavonne and Alethea had some nice choreography on this one. Keyboardist Jeff Young had some nice solo time and Luis Conte shined on percussion. 16. Just Say Yeah - Jackson introduced this song by saying it was something he wrote for his girlfriend. He then started to say more and said that he'd just dig himself into a whole and that all he really should say is that it's a love song he wrote for his girlfriend. After the first verse he added in an aside: "Hey baby, let's go up to Santa Barbara!" 17. The Late Show (k) - No introduction. This is a truly amazing song that Jackson didn't play in concert for the longest time. I can't tell you how many emails I've received from people who are thrilled that he's brought it back. So am I. The arrangement is fabulous. 18. For A Dancer (k) - No inroduction. This remains one of my all-time favorite songs. Simply beautiful. Jackson then stated, "Thank you for coming out to see us play." 19. The Pretender (k) - The whole crowd was on their feet from the first note. Everyone was singing along and from where I sat, you could hear it. Seemed like everyone in the crowd knew every word. (Much like "Take It Easy" at the end of the first set.) Jackson also invited the audience to stand closer, which many did. 20. Running On Empty (g) - Crowd remained on their feet and continued to sing along. First Encore: 21. I Am A Patriot (g) 22. It's Your Thing (g) - (This is the Isley Brothers hit song.) The crowd loved it. Second Encore: 23. The Load Out (k) 24. Stay (k) During "The Load Out", when he sang "working for the minimum wage" he added an aside: "Well, they used to." Drive all night and do a show in San Luis Obisbo. Again when he said that the towns all start to look the same, he added "except this one" and I couldn't quite make out what was on the video. (I thought it was something like "McGila Megan Freedman"??) Mark was great on the lap steel and Jeff on keyboards was highlighted a bit as well. The show ended at 9:55pm. After the show I again ran into Rosemary Butler and we talked for just a bit. She's got a show this Thursday in Santa Barbara at SoHo. We also got to talk with Kevin McCormick backstage and told him how much loved the show and what a great set list it was... and how great the band sounded. He made some comment about how they had been playing together for a lot of years now and they had better have it down. VERY briefly thanked Jeff for the show. Talk with a bunch of other people we knew and cut out before we had a chance to talk with Jackson as he was truly overwhlemed with people. I'm probably missing stuff, but it's now past 2am here and I'm fading. Great show. Great band. Great tour.' This years' concert was extremely special! Not only was it in celebration of my daughters 21st birthday, but having grown up in Santa Barbara it was a very special place to see Jackson perform. What a performance! An complete evening in Santa Barbara under the stars! It just does not get any better than that! He played so many of my favorite songs that I grew up with: "Shape of a Heart", "Stay", "Fountain of Sorrow", "Take it Easy", and "Running on Empty." Seeing my daughter appreciate the music I love, and having the opportunity to share this evening together is a memory I will always cherish. Submitted by: lisa@thekitchencosb.com (Lisa K.) Avila Beach is a small venue on the Central Coast of California and the perfect intimate setting for Jackson and his band. They were fantastic! The setlist was the same as you posted for the Santa Barbara Bowl, with one exception - he added Rock Me On The Water to the setlist! He started it off by saying "Here's one for the people out on the beach, I hope they can hear me . . . By the way, you owe me $40 bucks!" What a treat to have him throw in Rock Me On The Water as an added bonus! It was a wonderful night of listening to Jackson sing his songs to us for almost 3 hours. Editorial Assistant CONCERT REVIEW: August 19 at Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA Jackson Browne and his band sounded top notch tonight at Oakland's Paramount Theatre. Right off is the news that the Boy was less chatty than when we see him doing his solo acoustic program. It's a function of the band which precludes this dialogue. There isn't the time or intimacy for the level of interaction we're most recently familiar with because, you know, the man has a band to lead! Either way is right for me. The last time I heard Jackson and company play was at the SEVA Foundation's 30th Anniversary Benefit Concert in the same venue last September. It was the week that Time the Conqueror was released. I was excited by the fresh sound of new arrangements. The addition of singers Alethea Mills and Chavonne Morris expanded the range and play of the band, but there were rough edges. In the intervening months, with time and experience touring, we're hearing an ensemble in which the players and singers have fully integrated. Now we have a relaxed and tight sound with everyone playing off and trading off each other organically, and not self-consciously. The singers are polished. All on stage are having a good time, and so are we! Jackson noted that his younger son Ryan was in the house, as he pointed down front, stage left with a wide smile. He referenced Ryan as being a champion of Lives in the Balance, which we heard in a new arrangement. Ryan lives in San Francisco with his fellow band members, The Botticellis, for whom he plays bass. It was evident by Jackson's laid-back, playful manners, that he was giddy with happiness. When was the last time you saw Jackson shake it? I mean really wiggle his ass? And sell it? He was shamelessly flirtatious with his audience. In the Shape of a Heart had a tenderness and sweetness I've never heard before. This is a song which has seemed to trouble Jackson in performance. Maybe that's why it's infrequently offered. Those few times I have heard it, I've had the feeling that this piece is too personal to be sharing. Jackson's never looked comfortable with it to me. Tonight I got the sense that he has made peace with this song. It was as if he finally turned a page, and in doing so, changed the tone considerably. In his introduction to Going Down to Cuba, Jackson mentioned that the band had paid a visit to Cuba and performed. He talked a little about the challenges Americans face in arranging travel to Cuba. Someone shouted out, "Was it because you're famous?" Jackson chuckled at that and paused. "No, that's not it." and explained the band managed to get there "...on a religious visa." Set List, Oakland's Paramount Theatre, 19 August, 2009. Concert started at 8:10pm, and ended at 11:00pm with a 15 minute intermission. 1. I'm Alive 2. Barricades of Heaven 3. I'll Do Anything 4. The Load Out-Stay Submitted by: jarcchris@gmail.com CONCERT REVIEW: August 13 at Humphrey's in San Diego, CA The San Diego show was exactly like the show in Los Angeles the night before but the sound was better in Los Angeles. All the "talking points" and songs were the same with the exception of the dedication of a song to the people on the boats in the marina and his remark that they owed him $40.00. Many of us laughed at that as tickets haven't been $40.00 in many years. (I note he used the same line in Avila Beach.) The main difference for me was we were with our 25 year old twin daughters so we got (1) free drinks from the bartender and (2) an invitation for them to go backstage. This does not happen when I'm with people my own age. And thanks to Linda for her posting about the "item left at the Greek" that Russ posted in a prior letter. She went beyond the call of duty to find Russ's site, post the message, and meet up with me so I could get my camera back. Jackson's definitely got the nicest crowd of fans ever. Submitted by: lindamose@sbcglobal.net CONCERT REVIEW: August 18 at Avila Beach Resort in Avila Beach, CA Hi Russ, I have seen Jackson Browne in concert many times over the years and I have to say this concert was the best ever! Jackson and the band were at their best, energy was high and the crowd was great for the most part. I say for the most part only because towards the end some people were pretty drunk, crowding in front of us towards the stage, trying to get Jackson's attention, and one woman continuously thought she could dance with her arms all around my husband. I doubt she (and some others) remembered the concert the next day! One thing about this venue - they won't sell you a glass of wine so you have to buy a whole bottle if you want an alcohol drink! I found it humorous that so many people were walking around with a bottle of wine in their hands. Just different from what I am used to.The Avila Beach venue was one of the best I have been to. Right across from the ocean, beautiful hillsides around us, very low key and comfortable. We had second row center seats and were on the aisle in front of Jackson's keyboard - it was perfect! Jackson looked great and he was in a playful mood both with the audience and his band. Each member of the band was at their best. I love watching them all individually and as a group. I'm now regretting I didn't go to the Santa Barbara Bowl concert too but I know he will be back in our area before long and I'm thankful we have so many opportunities to see him locally here. I'll send you pictures that I took. Enjoy! The evening started with I'm Alive and went on from there with a set list similar to Santa Barbara......what a great show! Loved ...Take it Easy before the bands break! Sound was spectacular, of course the band was premium, vocals superb, what a wonderful set list! Enjoyed all the oldies and really enjoyed the newest additions. Saw the concert in the fall here in Seattle with lots of "Time the Conqueror" and the songs are just amazing!!! Jackson let us not forget (The Hall Of Fame), the hugely talented band, and the amazing vocals by Althea and Chavonne are really indescribable! Well this show was sold out so I guess we knew it would be Fabulous! Submitted by: pamlivingston17@gmail.com CONCERT REVIEW: August 19 at Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA This was my second JB concert. The first one was in April 2008, and he was playing solo. It was great, but I was really excited to finally see him do a show with a band. I knew it would be great because I loved Time The Conqueror (both the song and the album) and of course, I love his classics. My hopes for this concert were high, but Jackson and his band managed to exceed them anyway. The Paramount Theatre was beautiful and & I guess "majestic" is a good word for it. The band was great. The drummer was absolutely brimming with energy and it just seeped into the audience. Jackson's voice was as good as ever (He's sixty?! Sixty what? Certainly not sixty years!). The set list was great. I might even say, perfect. And I was lucky enough to have what I think was among the best seats in the house - balcony, front row, right in the middle! (That's the result of making my dad sit in front of the computer, credit card in hand, waiting for the moment the tickets went on sale). Here's the set list: I'm Alive The Barricades Of Heaven I'll Do Anything Fountain Of Sorrow Time The Conqueror Off Of Wonderland In The Shape Of A Heart Too Many Angels The Naked Ride Home Take It Easy [intermission] Jamaica Say You Will Rock Me On The Water Doctor My Eyes / About My Imagination Lives In The Balance Going Down To Cuba Just Say Yeah The Late Show For A Dancer The Pretender Running On Empty Encore 1: I Am A Patriot / It's Your Thing Encore 2: The Load-Out / Stay This set list had it all. The Late Show?! According to what I have heard, hearing that in a live show is very rare (until this month, apparently). I loved when Jackson put his arm out and pulled it back in when the drummer made a loud "bang!", to imitate the car door slamming at the end of the song. His early songs were great live - For A Dancer, Jamaica Say You Will (a nice surprise!), and of course, Rock Me On The Water. That was my favorite song of the evening. It was really energetic and Jackson and the girls sang really well. Doctor My Eyes was amazing. Everyone on the lower level got up and started dancing. For some reason, the balcony people stayed sitting down, but it was still very energetic. Off Of Wonderland was great. It was really rockin'! And of course, the combo of The Pretender and Running On Empty was an awesome close. Then we got an extended version of I Am A Patriot for the encore. It was pretty funny how people cheered louder when he sang "and I ain't no Republican" than when he said "and I ain't no Communist". I love JB's fan demographic! I liked the new arrangement, which included another song tied to the end. Then he left the stage, which was surprising because he hadn't done The Load-Out/Stay yet! But he did end up coming back for a second encore, for exactly that reason. It was a perfect end to a perfect night. One interesting observation I made: I didn't see a single other person that was in my age group (I'm 18) except my brother. Most (if not all) of the people there were my parents' age. I guess their generation did a terrible job of showing their kids good music, considering that most people my age like rap and metal (if you can even call that "music" I would use the term "noise"). My parents did their job! (And I'm sure most people reading this review did their best too!). That didn't affect my enjoyment of the concert, it was just an interesting observation. Anyway, the concert was amazing and I will probably remember that night for the rest of my life! Hopefully I'll be able to see him a few more times before he "retires", if that ever happens. And if this concert is any indication, there's no reason for him to do that any time soon! Submitted by: esh314@gmail.com (Eddie H.) CONCERT REVIEW: August 13 at Humphrey's in San Diego, CA This concert was my birthday present to me. I purchased a room at Humphrey's resort that allowed me to have 2nd row center seats in the intimate outdoor bayside concert venue that seats 1,400. When I checked into the resort and I told the 20-something girl at the front desk I was going to see Jackson Browne she told me she had to look on the internet to find out who Jackson Browne was because his concert sold out the first day the tickets went on sale. I told her he is one of the most prolific songwriter/singers of our time and if she was working during his concert she should come out to hear him - he's the greatest. Since I was staying at the resort I was there all day and I was able to sneak a peek at Jackson during sound check - that just ignited the excitement of the concert further. About 40 minutes before the start of the concert, my friend (another huge Jackson Browne fan) and I were headed back to my room so she could change. We come down the steps through the poolside gate towards my room only to look up and see Jackson standing by one of his trunks in the outside patio area of his backstage room. He looks up and smiles and we smile back - my friend and I both shocked that he was steps just away from us. His concert was absolutely awesome. He opened with I'm Alive and took off from there. He and his band sounded great! Jackson commented on the venue saying he was happy to play in such an idyllic place - right on the bay, surrounded by Palm trees and sail boats - "This is what people envision when they think of California," he said. He did look very relaxed; smiling a lot while on stage. Jackson played for close to 3 hours and looked genuinely happy with the sold-out crowd response to his performance. Backstage after the show, my friend and I tried to muster up the courage to snap a picture of him while he greeted some friends but couldn't do it. Nor could we do it while he was quietly working on his laptop in his backstage room. About midnight, my husband and I walked my friend out to her car passing by the roadies breaking down the stage. As my husband and I walked back to our room, we passed Jackson, his assistant and a security guard in the corridor as they were heading out to his bus - heading on to Las Vegas. I couldn't pass up that opportunity to say something to him. I said "Goodnight Jackson" and "Thank you". He graciously replied "Goodnight" and headed off to another show. That passing in the corridor put the exclamation point on an absolutely incredible day. Oh yeah - at the very end of his concert Jackson dedicated the concert to Les Paul. Jackson is a class act and truly timeless. Thanks Russ for keeping up this website for all of us JB fans!!!! We attended the Las Vegas concert on August 15 at Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas. We had the time of our lives reliving our youth through Jackson's songs. We grew up in a prairie town in Western Canada where there was little else to do but listen to great music. That was about 40 years ago. Our dream was to see one of Jackson's concerts this year. The venue at Red Rock is amazing, in the open air with about 6 swimming pools and many bars decorating the resort area. We couldn't have asked for a better night. Older hits such as "For a Dancer" and "Sky Blue and Black" along with a newer tune "Time the Conquerer" were performed flawlessly and beyond expectations. Jackson's "darker" songs are balanced with his humour and down to earth personality. Thank-you, Jackson Browne for an evening we will always remember! You are truly a blessed and gifted musician.
