CONCERT REVIEWS: March 8, 2011 at Long Beach Terrace Theatre in Long Beach, CA AND March 29, 2011 at Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, AB, Canada

I had the good fortune of seeing Jackson's solo acoustic in Long Beach and then again in Calgary. Both concerts were absolutely great and all of you going to his future concerts are in for a real treat. I think the thing that Jackson really appreciated in Calgary, was that the audience called out some great songs that aren't the regular favourites. Examples are The Naked Ride Home and Off of Wonderland. It seemed to make Jackson feel more relaxed and funny and that added to the stories and to the concert. You can only imagine on his schedule what playing the same songs over and over again is like. Maybe you won't hear Sky Blue and Black at your concert, but you will hear something equally or more fantastic &.. like Warren Zevon's Life'll Kill Ya or Don't Let Us Get Sick.

It's a tough call sometimes in these concerts, is the artist entertaining you, or are you in part giving back to the artist for writing their life in a book and then opening it up for you? I'll leave that up to each of you, but for those going to concerts in the future if you dig up some of those great newer songs or songs that didn't get as much airplay you'll be in for a real treat.

CONCERT REVIEWS: April 6, 2011 at Hamilton Place Theatre in Hamilton, ON, Canada

Russ, Due to your site, I was able to ask for, and get a response, for tickets to Jackson's show last night at The Great Hall@Hamilton Place Theater, in Hamilton, Ontario.

It was a 3.5 hour trip from Erie, Pa to Hamilton, with a stop in Niagara Falls, NY where we got a hotel. It was raining very hard most of the trip with heavy truck traffic and road spray, and then it started snowing..on April 6th?? We had to stop along the way in St Catharine's to pick up the tickets. The gal that was gracious enough to give up her seats (in the 15th row...very nice) to a complete stranger, actually left them in her mailbox, with the idea that I would leave the cash. All this being negotiated via e-mail. Well, we both completed this very unique arrangement, and we were off.

I was told that this venue was built specifically for acoustic music. In all the times I have been to concerts, I have NEVER heard sound quality like this. Every chord, pick, piano key or Jackson's voice felt like it was in your heart and soul.

He started with a stunning ..Barricades of Heaven...then Looking In To You..then Jamaica Say You Will. He was very engaging with the crowd, cracking jokes, telling stories and apologizing for his, as he said it, not my sick, but rough voice. There were times when his voice cracked, but over all...it was crystal!! He made a few mistakes, and forgot some words, but he always smiled, said oh shit, then carried on.

As everyone knows, he allows us to call out songs, then he will choose one. I screamed out Farther On... and he did it. Made my night!!!

Thanks, Russ for your site, and a HUGE thanks to D.G for the tickets...

CONCERT REVIEWS: April 9, 2011 at Place des Arts in Montreal, QC, Canada

Hi Russ,

Here's Gazette music critic Bernard Perusse's review of the Montreal show on Apr. 9, 2011.

Also, here's my review of the show. If you decide to use it, please post anonymously.

Concert Review: Apr. 9, 2011 Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of Place des Arts, Montreal, QC

Really enjoyed the show. I saw Jackson perform here during the Jazz Festival in July 2009, but preferred this show. He seemed more relaxed, at ease and really sang from the heart.

SET LIST:

Barricades of Heaven.

Cocaine. A request. "o.k., but it'll be the rehab version."

Looking into You.

Rosie. "A city after my own heart, when a woman calls for Rosie." He also mentioned very emphatically that the song was NOT about him.

Live Nude Cabaret. "...following the same theme"

Fountain of Sorrow. A request.

Doctor My Eyes.

Giving that Heaven Away. About a girl he met at a festival. The song was written about something that happened 30 years ago. Said he DID write songs about more "current" events, though...

Linda Paloma. Always a highlight for me. I loved this performance, despite his misstep near the end when he had trouble finding the right key. He talked about how he had played it with a full mariachi band, but said we'd have to "imagine the harps."

Going Down to Cuba. A request.

Lives in the Balance. Spoke about how his son, who's now 29, had asked him to start singing it again.

Rock Me on the Water. He talked about the need to cut down on plastic and mentioned that he had discovered shampoo in the form of a bar of soap, and vegan (no beeswax) dental floss in a box. (Wow, talk about walking the walk.) He admitted that his electric piano was made of plastic, but added that he does, actually, play it "over and over again." Great song to end the first set.

INTERMISSION

For Everyman.

For a Dancer. The show just kept getting better.

Shaky Town. Written by Danny Kortchmar. "The perfect road song."

Somebody's Baby. Written with Danny Kortchmar.

Your Bright Baby Blues. One of my favourites.

You Love the Thunder. I don't think I've ever heard this performed live. I loved it! Manny Alvarez joined him on stage to play some bottleneck guitar.

Take it Easy. A crowd-pleaser, with the audience clapping along.

In the Shape of a Heart

The Pretender

Love Needs a Heart. A request from the crew for Dennis Scrimo. (It was his birthday).

Running on Empty

ENCORE:

The Load Out/Stay. Jackson dedicated this to the crew. With "Trailer Park Boys" on the video.

I thought he got better as the night went on. He went for the high notes and played his heart out. He also forever endeared himself to Montrealers with his French pronunciation of the city name. He said he was learning to say it the "other way: MON-ray-al."

We were quieter than the "other Canadians," he mused. He then mentioned that someone at the Kingston, Ont. concert had called out, with regard to the show, "It's all about you!" to which Jackson jokingly agreed. But for those of us in the audience it certainly felt like it was all about us. Great, great show.

CONCERT REVIEW: April 23, 2011 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN

Dear Russ,
The Jackson Browne concert I attended last night in Hammond Indiana sucked.
Jackson had 20 guitars and a keyboard.
Where was the band?
Where was the guitarists, drummer and keyboardists?
Jackson didn't advertise this as an unplugged or acoustic concert.
Frankly I felt cheated as did my buddy Don and several other concertgoers.
The songs sounded nothing like his recordings.
I thought the concert experience was suppose to mirror the studio records.
Was Jackson experimenting?
Or was he just too cheap or greedy to hire an actual band?
Either way I feel the $80.00 ticket price was a gyp for what I saw.
Huey Lewis and the News charged $80.00 and he had a 10 piece band behind him.
I feel Jackson owes everyone $40.00 back.
Very disappointing.
Sincerely,

Webmaster's Reply:

Hi Michael. Yours is an interesting letter, if only because it's the first truly negative review I've read anywhere from this tour. I've read hundreds of reviews posted here and elsewhere around the Internet and this review is unique.

Jackson's currently tour has been highly publicized as a SOLO ACOUSTIC tour. And if you want a show that exactly like the albums, this tour sounds EXACTLY like his two recent solo releases: Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1 and Solo Acoustic, Vol. 2.

Over the years, the vast majority of Jackson's tours have been with a full band, but sometimes he likes to present a more intimate show... and from what I've heard from his fans, most of them really like the solo acoustic setting. Of course, having said that, there are certainly many fans who prefer the full band shows.

My suggestion before attending other concerts in the future is to do more research to find out what you are getting. Many of the "older" bands who are on tour now are actually touring with completely different lineups than when they had their hits. Some are mostly the same, but with different lead singers. This can be VERY misleading. But there was nothing misleading about this show because it was publicized as a SOLO ACOUSTIC show. Just visit Jackson Browne's official website's TOUR PAGE and the first thing you'll notice is the large photo of Jackson down the right hand side of the current dates with the words: "Jackson Browne SOLO ACOUSTIC".

Frankly, if you wanted a show featuring Jackson's full band performing "Doctor My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "The Pretender", "Running On Empty", "Stay", "Boulevard", "Somebody's Baby" and "Lawyers In Love" (generally speaking his biggest "hits" in the U.S.), you were probably going to walk away disappointed. Jackson does perform most of these songs in concert, but not all of them on any given night. He has released more than a dozen studio albums of songs and he tends to play songs from throughout his career, including many fan favorites that were not necessarily radio hits. Most of his fans seem to appreciate the depth of his catalog, but I can see how the casual fan might be disappointed about a favorite song being left out. With a song catalog as deep as his, it's impossible for him to include every song, every night and please everyone. I was pretty impressed with the song choices when I saw him last month, though again he did miss many of my personal favorites.

CONCERT REVIEW: April 18, 2011 at John Labatt Centre in London, ON, Canada

We were fortunate to see Jackson play at Hamilton Place on April 6th. We had the best night and could not resist the opportunity to see him again in London last night. Lucky us... we got front row tickets.

It was a small intimate amphitheatre and every seat was good.

This was Jackson's last Canadian show. He was in top form and seemed to enjoy the interaction with the audience. Despite being mid tour he played and sounded better than ever.

The sound was excellent. Our view was excellent. Jackson's stories were fabulous.

A couple of evenings we will certainly never forget.

Thanks Jackson. We are fans from the time of your original album.

CONCERT REVIEW: April 23, 2011 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN

I attended the solo acoustic show at Hammond, IN on April 23rd, and Jackson was outstanding. His voice was a little rough at the start, but he got stronger as the night went on. This definitely was a concert for the long-time fans as he dug deep in the catalog, and provided a few stories about the songs. He seemed very relaxed and even though he did not play a request for "Lawyers in Love", he told a funny story about when he played at a party for a lawyer friend and had to look up the lyrics on the internet in order to play the song.

Here is the setlist from Hammond to the best of my knowledge:

The Barricades of Heaven
These Days
Farther On
Fountain of Sorrow
Rock Me on the Water
Giving That Heaven Away
Sky Blue and Black
Rosie
Your Bright Baby Blues
Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate
The Pretender
Call it a Loan
In the Shape of a Heart
Something Fine
Running on Empty
Encore:
Somebody's Baby
Take it Easy

I very much appreciated the solo acoustic format as it gives one the impression of how the songs sounded in their raw form when he wrote them. My only disappointment was that based on reviews of other shows on the tour, the Hammond show seemed much shorter (by about six or seven songs). He did mention at one point that because he was playing at a casino, there would not be an intermission, so I wondered if the show was shorter because of the venue. All in all, though, it was a great night.

CONCERT REVIEW: April 23, 2011 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN

Russ,

I have read the review from Michael P and your response of the concert at The Venue in Hammond IN and while I agree with you on what to expect I have to agree that this show was not one of his best. Now before you try to explain away about the format I have seen the solo acoustic tour about 6 years ago in Indianapolis and it was one of the great concerts I have ever attended and I have been to about 200. I also have about twenty boot recordings of live shows along with several studio discs, so I think I am little more than a casual fan. I first saw Jackson in 1978 I think, it was a "No nuke" with Graham Nash at the Forum in LA. This show was my 5th time seeing JB and I was disappointed. What I was upset about was the fact that he played only 17 songs versus the 24-27 he had been playing up to this show on the tour. What was the issue? something was not right, I had bragged for weeks to my wife how he had performed for two and a half hours when I saw the solo show before and kept reading the reviews and set lists leading up to this show then it was over in about 90 minutes. It literally took us longer to get in and out of this venue than he played. I have always loved his music but as he gets older he is getting to be exactly what I never thought he was before and that is pretentious and arrogant. I really felt that this show was too short for the money and time I invested( I drove 3 1/2 hours). I hate to say it but I will not go to see him again and I think we as fans that were there deserve to know why the show was so much shorter than the others on the tour.

Thanks

Webmaster's Reply:

I can answer this question. The show was in a casino. Casino's usually have very specific limitations on the length of the concerts they host. They want people back out in the casino spending their money. I never go to see concerts at casinos when there is an alternative. They are almost always shorter in length.

Russ

AN OPEN LETTER TO JACKSON BROWNE

Russ; I don't know if you'll get a chance to post this, but here goes anyway.

An open letter to Jackson Browne:
Hey Jackson; would you play "Before The Deluge" in Minneapolis May fourth? I'm taking my youngest daughter, Sam, to the show on her 24th birthday (her first JB concert). It's one of my many favorites of yours and I used some of the words when I did the eulogy for one of my best friends (also a JB fan for many years) a year ago.

If you don't sing it, I understand, but you'll likely never hear me yelling for it once the crowd starts shouting its requests.

Thanks.

And thanks again Russ for your work.

CONCERT REVIEW: April 23, 2011 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN

Dear Russ,

I commend you for actually printing my negative review of the Jackson Browne concert.
That shows you have integrity and are not bias.
The concert was NOT listed as being acoustic in the Chicago Reader.
The concert was NOT listed as being acoustic in the Horseshoe Casino website.
The concert was NOT listed as being acoustic in the Ticketmaster website.
Jackson should have done a better job of advertising how this concert was going to be.

Sincerely,

CONCERT REVIEW: April 23, 2011 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN

Hi Russ, I had the pleasure of seeing Jackson Saturday night at The Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. I already knew that it was a solo acoustic concert and Jackson is the only person that I would drive almost 5 hours to see. I am close to seeing jackson 20 times and am very glad that I have been able to do so. I did not memorize the set list but it was very good to say the least. The only complaint that I have is that it was at a casino and I was unable to take my daughter with me since she is only 18. I love everything about Jackson Browne and I am now hoping that he will add tour dates of either Indy or Cincinnati so that I can take her to see him for her third time before she leaves for college. No matter how great he is there will always be somebody looking for something to complain about. Thanks,
