Tom Corbett was only eleven years old when he commandeered an old Vega banjo-mandolin his dad picked up at a garage sale, and he's never been the same since. In his formative years, Corbett did the obligatory stint in Disneyland's bluegrass band and also played at Sea World with Billy Ray Lathum (Kentucky Colonels, Laurel Canyon Ramblers).
Tom did a three-year residency with the acclaimed Acousticats, contributing three songs to their 1994 album, The Cat's Meow. He has backed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's John McEuen in the String Wizards and accompanied numerous other artists, including singer Jennifer Warnes. Corbett is active on L.A.'s acoustic music scene, playing mandolin and guitar with numerous acts on stage and in the studio. He just released his second solo album, Cloudless Blue Sky in the weeks prior to this house concert, so the evening doubled as a CD release party!
Tom Corbett has been one of our favorite "sidemen" in the acoustic music scene since the first time we saw him. He always seems to be backing some of the best in the business, which only begins to describe the smooth talent he has on mandolin and guitar. We're glad to see him step into the spotlight fronting his own cast of musicians.
Accompanying Tom Corbett for this show was the incomparable Bill Knopf (who has performed with Donna Douglas, Doc Severinsen, The Rounders, The Disneyland Bluegrass Band, and appeared musically on the Dukes of Hazard, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, and Days of our Lives, to name just a few) and jack-of-all-trades David Ferguson (author of the books Country Fingerpicking and Fingerstyle Blues).
It was a wonderful evening of bluegrass style music featuring the amazing talent, charm and smile of Tom Corbett. Please visit Tom's website at www.tomcorbett.net to purchase his CDs and see where he's performing next.
