Saturday, July 31, 2010, 8pm - Jon Pousette-Dart and Cathy-Anne McClintock
Jon Pousette-Dart captained the Pousette-Dart Band through four albums for Capitol Records between 1976 and 1980, a run that acquainted a generation with his formidable gifts as a singer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist and all-around musical adventurer. During this time, the Pousette-Dart Band became one of the busiest touring groups in the U.S., working with such acts as the Byrds, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, James Taylor, Yes, The J. Geils Band, Eddie Money, Peter Frampton, Journey and Billy Joel. After the band closed up shop in 1981, Pousette-Dart moved to New York, where he established himself during the following decade as a top writer, slide guitarist and singer for recording sessions and advertising jingles. In 1997, he recorded the solo album Ready To Fly. Pousette-Dart extended is musical reach through 1998 to 1999 by producing 5 episodes for the History Channel, titled "Gunfighters of the West", and garnered forces with blues diva Toni Lynn Washington, who went on to record his songs on her latest release produced by Duke Robillard. His own album, Sample This, released in 2000, contained solo tracks, as well as ones he had recorded with Kostas, Lowell George (who he toured with in the 70's) and John Bohlinger. He also appears on Jesse Winchester's upcoming DVD, singing with Valerie Carter, and an all-star band featuring, John Sebastion, Jim Horn, Victor Krauss, and many others. He completed his latest CD, Heart and Soul in April 2005, which garnered national airplay.

Saturday, September 4, 2010, 8pm - Jack Tempchin and I See Hawks In L.A.
For this House Concert only, the Suggested Donation is $20 per person.
Jack Tempchin is an American musician and singer-songwriter best known for writing the Eagles classic "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and co-writing their hit "Already Gone" with band member Glenn Frey. (Both songs appear on the Eagles Greatest Hits album, the best-selling album of all time in the U.S.) In all, he co-wrote more than dozen songs with the Eagles, including Frey's solo hits "Smuggler's Blues" and "You Belong to the City." Among numerous other songs, Tempchin wrote "Slow Dancin' (Swayin' to the Music)." The song was first recorded by the short-lived group "The Funky Kings" which Tempchin was a member of at the time. In 1977 the song became a top 10 pop hit for Johnny Rivers and in 1979 it was a top 10 country hit for Johnny Duncan. Tempchin also shared co-writing credits for Sammy Kershaw's 1995 single "Your Tattoo". Tempchin also has toured extensively as a solo artist over the years, opening for artists such as Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Dave Mason,Poco, Dolly Parton, Karla Bonoff, Chicago, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and Emmylou Harris. He has released a half dozen solo albums including his most recent CD Songs (2008). We are THRILLED to be hosting the legendary Jack Tempchin at Russ & Julie's House Concerts.
I See Hawks In L.A. was formed in 1999 by Rob Waller and brothers Paul and Anthony Lacques. After writing their first batch of songs, they sought advice from local country rock guru David Jackson, bassist with John Denver, Dillard and Clark, and EmmyLou Harris. Jackson set up a few mics and recorded Rob and Paul, adding his own melodic bass lines. This demo turned into featured songs on the Hawks eponymous debut, featuring legendary fiddler Brantley Kearns (Dwight Yoakam, Dave Alvin, Hazel Dickens). The CD established the Hawks signature sound: high lonesome three part harmonies, twang guitar and unadorned acoustic arrangements, with lyrics musing on mortality, whales, and the geography of pre-apocalyptic L.A. ISHILA received rave reviews, made the F.A.R. Alternative Country Chart, and continues to get regular airplay. With its experimental spirit and wide ranging musical influences, the record tweaked some traditionalists. But most agree that the Hawks have broken new ground. Shows all over SoCal garnered the Hawks L.A. Weekly's Best Country Artist awards in 2002 and 2003. Bassist/vocalist Paul Marshall (Strawberry Alarm Clock, Hank Thompson, Rose Maddox) threw in with the Hawks after sitting in at Ronnie Mack's Barndance in Burbank. When brother Anthony left to pursue documentary film making, drummer Shawn Nourse (Dwight Yoakam, James Intveld) signed on for a tour and never left.
Saturday, October 2, 2010, 8pm - Kimberley Dahme and Jill Knight
Kimberley Dahme started to play the flute in third grade, the guitar in sixth, and was in a Boston cover band while still in elementary school. She was on the "You Can Be a Star" TV show. At 19 she started to do radio jingles as a singer and songwriter; her credits include Toyota, Wrangler jeans and Pontiac. She studied music in college and took up Radio/TV announcing to overcome her shyness. As a Freshman in college she won a solo part in "A Midsummer Nights Dream" over 75 other girls. While working in Tom Hambridge's band, Kimberley was noticed by Tom Scholz of the band Boston, who came to a club performance to check out Hambridge as a replacement drummer for Boston. Scholz liked Hambridge but was really impressed with Kimberley's singing and asked her if she played bass. Without hesitation she answered "I can learn!" and a couple of months later was on stage with Boston at the Fiesta Bowl in front of 80,000 people and millions of TV viewers. Tom Scholz liked her songwriting so much that he included her song "With You" on the latest Boston CD, Corporate America. She had recorded it as a one-take voice and guitar demo but Tom loved the performance so much that he just added a few backing tracks and it went on the album. Several tours with the band have made her one of the fan's favorites and a stand out example for women who rock. Kimberley has released several solo CDs.
Jill Knight's soulful sound is unmistakable. India Arie once quoted, "I love great voices and when I heard Jill sing it stopped me in my tracks, and I had to listen." She later asked Knight to be her opening act. A finalist at the Telluride Troubadour competition, a finalist at the National Academy of Songwriters "songwriter of the year" competition, a finalist in Billboard Magazine's, "best unsigned band" contest, a regional best seller in Album Network magazine for her album Future Perfect, and voted as one of the best DIY albums in Performing Songwriter Magazine, Honorable mention NSAI songwriting competition, Finalist in the Acoustic Live songwriter competition. Jill has toured and shared stages with India Arie, Shawn Colvin, David Wilcox, Michael Hedges, Phoebe Snow, Richard Thompson, Richard Thompson, Little Feat, and many others. "Its hard to say which is better - the song or the way Jill Knight sings it." (Performing Songwriter) "Few songwriters seem to have the self-assurance that this singer possesses... Knight approaches her music with an unadorned intensity, her songs pack an emotional punch rich in the details of everyday experiences... this is first rate, high quality music." (Dirty Linen) "With a voice that crests and tumbles like a waterfall, Knight is as elemental as the wind." (Sacramento News and Reviews)
Saturday, November 20, 2010, 8pm - Freebo and Friends
This House Concert is sponsored by Rick Hermelin, Therapeutic Massage. 805-494-8481
Freebo played bass on recordings and toured with some of the great artists of our time -- people like Bonnie Raitt (10 years), John Mayall, CSN, Maria Muldaur, Ringo Starr, Michelle Shocked, Loudon Wainwright, Dr. John, and many others. Yearning for more creative expression, however, he began a process of deep inner discovery and has now evolved into an award-winning singer/songwriter, having won The 2008 Posi Award for Best Song in The Most Uniting Category, The 2007 Los Angeles Music Awards Best Folk Artist, and The '07 South Florida Songwriting Contest, as well as being nominated in 5 categories in the JPF Awards with two songs in the top 10 of the USA Songwriting Contest. The Philadelphia Inquirer said of Freebo's latest CD, "Before the Separation flows with a compassionate spirit rooted in 60's ideals, packs a gently urgent relevancy, and is delivered with engaging earnestness." Freebo's songs embrace stylistic elements from all the many musical genres he has played throughout his career, but they are uniquely his own. And in his live shows, performed on acoustic guitar, Freebo creates a unique, intimate, and inclusive atmosphere with his audience.
RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.
