Friday, August 20, 2010 - Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion
To be held at the Thousand Oaks Library, 8pm; Suggested Donation: $20

SARAH LEE GUTHRIE was two years old when she made her singing debut as part of a children s chorus on Arlo's 1981 album, Power of Love. After high school, she became tour-manager for her father, but it wasn't until she met Johnny in the fall of 1997 that she recognized her musical calling.
JOHNNY IRION came out of the vibrant Carolina indie-rock scene of the early '90s, first as a member of Queen Sarah Saturday and later with Dillon Fence.
"Authentic." "Timeless." "Harmonious." "Exhilarating." Any or all of these adjectives could describe the folk-rock sound created by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion (eye-ree-un). The musical richness and psychological depth of their initial collaboration, the fittingly titled 2005 album Exploration, is irrefutable proof that the disarming granddaughter of Woody/daughter of Arlo and the prodigious South Carolinian quite naturally bring out the best in each other.

Friday, September 10, 2010 - David Wilcox

The New York Daily News said DAVID WILCOX gave "sensitive singer/songwriters back their good name." A self-taught guitar player who experiments with a variety of tunings, Wilcox backs his thought-provoking lyrics with fluid guitar work. He has won a loyal following through his memorable live performances, which he takes pride in adapting to different audiences.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Wilcox briefly attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Following his year at Antioch, Wilcox hit the road, spending the next three years traveling, working odd jobs, and playing guitar. In 1986 he released his debut album on his Song of the Wood label, The Nightshift Watchman. Thank to a performance at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee, Wilcox attracted the attention of A&M Records. A&M signed him in 1989 and released How Did You Find Me Here? as his major label debut, followed by Home Again in 1991 and Big Horizon in 1994.
Wilcox was well regarded from the start and became one of the most popular in a new generation of American folk artists. He writes thoughtful songs about intimate subjects, such as romantic commitment; many of the songs seem almost confessional. His guitar work is intricate and flowing. Critically acclaimed early in his career, he was often referred to as the "new James Taylor" and also won comparisons with such British folk artists as Nick Drake and John Martyn. He quickly became an established touring musician.

Introducing THE DREAMSICLES - the Texas based folk/pop duo featuring Tom Prasada-Rao and Cary Cooper. Two voices and a guitar, intricate harmonies with a little cheerleading thrown in, singing love songs for grown ups. They've been touring together for two years, and have just finished their second CD. Both Tom and Cary are Kerrville New Folk Competition Winners - accomplished songwriters in their own right. They draw on their experience in classical violin, musical theater, raising kids, and living in the third world to create songs which navigate the territory between Everything But The Girl and Leonard Cohen, Lucy Kaplansky and Krishna Das.
Cary Cooper has won the New Folk Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival. She's been a finalist in the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival's Emerging Artist Showcase, and Mountain Stage's NewSong contest. He has appeared in many classic movies such as Deliverance (Drew Ballinger), Bound For Glory (Ozark Bule), The Onion Field (Det. Sgt. Pierce R. Brooks), Taps (Colonel Kerby), Beverly Hills Cop (Lt. He has performed musically on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Bottom Line in New York with Leon Redbone, National Public Radio's Mountain Stage with Guy Clark, as well as other national stages.
The music of JACK WILLIAMS, rooted in his native South Carolina, is shaped by a 51-year career of playing folk, rock, jazz, R&B, classical and the popular music of the 30s, 40s and 50s. He is counted among the most dynamic performers on today's "folk" circuit - "...one of the most enlightened and entertaining performers I've ever encountered", said Dave Humphreys of Two-Way Street Coffeehouse in Downer's Grove, IL. Jack is considered a "musician's musician", an uncommonly unique guitarist, a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place, and a storyteller in an old Southern tradition who further illustrates each tale with his guitar. Rich Warren of WFMT Chicago's The Midnight Special said, "His artistry is nothing short of amazing". Vic Heyman, in SING OUT!, wrote, "He is one of the strongest guitar players in contemporary folk."
Avoiding the compromises of the commercial music industry during his 50+-year professional career, Jack prefers touring under the radar, playing concerts, large and small, week in and week out, from the sheer love of music and performing. Playing for more than 50 house concerts each year, Jack enjoys the intimacy of that venue most of all, with a more personal connection to his listeners. Jack is a sought-after artist on all contemporary acoustic music stages, from coffeehouses to music halls and city arts stages. In addition to his solo career, as a guitarist he has accompanied such luminaries as Tom Paxton, Peter Yarrow, Mickey Newbury and Harry Nilsson. From acclaimed appearances at the Newport, Boston, Philadelphia, Kerrville, New Bedford SummerFest Folk Festivals, his musicianship, songs, stories and commanding presence have established him as an uncommonly inspiring and influential performer.
