Saturday, July 25, 2009 - Sweet Talk Radio and Nathan McEuen
To be held at the Thousand Oaks Library, 8pm
It's all about chemistry. The science of matter. Properties and reactions. Sweet Talk Radio is the husband and wife team of Kathrin Shorr & Tim Burlingame. Their new record, "My Hallelujah", much like the lyrical images it references - Hank Williams, the mighty Mississippi River or the changing current of a love affair - is full of strength and vulnerability. With undeniable chemistry both on and off stage, STR create americana-pop songs full of depth and yearning delivered with passion and an earnest desire to connect. TOGETHER, Kathrin and Tim have had songs featured in numerous television series like "In Plain Sight", "Joan of Arcadia", "Beautiful People", "Dawson's Creek" and "Party of Five", as well as commercials for Sears and Mattel. Their touring has taken them throughout much of the U.S., the U.K. and Denmark. Sweet Talk Radio have opened for/shared the stage with: Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket), Kelly Jo Phelps, Shawn Colvin, Kenny Loggins, Crosby Loggins, John Gorka, and Jimmy LaFave. Their debut release "My Hallelujah" was written and produced by Shorr and Burlingame at home and is a sonic ride of beauty and grit. Heavy on hooks and harmonies, SWEET TALK RADIO delivers a sound more expansive than most singer-songwriters today, and fans are tuning in.
Nathan McEuen's career in music is not something unexpected. He grew up in and around the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by incredible music and talented musicians, and his childhood was spent on the road being roadie#2 for his dad John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and learning as much about the business of music as he could soak in. He wrote his first song by the age of eight, and started singing at an early age backing his brother Jonathan and Dad at festivals, bars, theaters, and radio stations. Inspiration was never in short supply, as he grew up around people like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash. Though his early experiences ignited his passion for music, it was his own hard work and creative magic that has gotten him to stages like The Grand Ol' Opry and Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He has opened for David Crosby and Graham Nash, Dave Mason, Kenny Loggins, John Denver, Dwight Yoakam, Monte Montgomery, and performed with Kevin Nealon (SNL), Brett Dennen, and Mario Calire (Ozomatli, Wallflowers). He has worked with Greg Penny (producer K.D. Lang, Elton John), Paul Williams, Willie Nelson, and many others. His work has been called "future retro folk rock," but while his music acknowledges folk traditions, little of his music seems overtly folk.

Sunday, September 20, 2009 - Jimmy LaFave
To be held at the Thousand Oaks Library, 6pm
Jimmy LaFave recorded his first self produced tape, Highway Angels...Full Moon Rain in 1988, which won the Austin Chronicle Reader's Poll Tape of the Year Award. This led to a recording contract with a small independent label. In 1992 Jimmy released a self produced CD, Austin Skyline, which drew international attention to his songwriting and vocal talents, and led to a publishing agreement with Polygram Music. Due to his growing popularity and radio play on more than 200 stations, Austin Skyline and its label, Bohemia Beat, received national distribution through the Rounder Record Group. His second album, Highway Trance was released in 1994 followed by his third CD, Buffalo Return to the Plains, in 1995. The grass roots demand and critical acclaim for Jimmy's music, which led to extensive touring in the United States and Europe, was recognized in 1996 when he was asked to tape a performance for the PBS musical series Austin City Limits, and was invited by Nora Guthrie to appear in Cleveland at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to Woody Guthrie. That same year LaFave won his second consecutive Austin Music Award for Best Singer Songwriter. His fourth CD, Road Novel, which was released in early 1997, received many glowing reviews. This stunningly soulful album was LaFave's first in 4 years and won him much critical attention. LaFave's new album Cimarron Manifesto finds Jimmy taking a more country road, with sweet and mournful songs about life and loss and special guest appearances by Carrie Rodriguez, Ruthie Foster and Kacy Crowley.
